Re: Auto to Manual conversion

Ron, I purchased the power booster you mentioned, but my brake pedal is still soft after installing all new wheel cylinders, master cylinder, shoes and bleeding the brakes several times. Someone told me the brake push rod is too short. Did you have to change the length of your push rod? Thanks in ad...

Re: Toploader

One final question. What length of speed-o cable did you use for your 4-speed transmission? I have been told you need an 82 inch long cable.

Re: Toploader

I tired to attach a photo, but could not as the board attachment quota had been reached. This was my comment. This is the center transmission tunnel with the hump I plan to use. Purchased this "hump" from a friend and assume it is a Ford factory item (50 year old original part), but from what model ...

Re: Toploader

Not sure what you are referring too; "bronze needle bushing". Are you referring to the pilot shaft bushing? If so, I used the old standard bronze bushing. After I had installed it, I was pulling out the pressure plate of the box and noticed the roller bearing. Had I seen it, I would have installed i...

Re: Toploader

Comechero65 or Ron, I'm happy to report the 4-speed is in and all bolts are tight. Fits like a glove. I think the bushing was just too close of a fit, but with one drop of oil it went right in. Then I put the pressure and clutch plate, and the bell housing back on. It fought me a little, but when I ...

Re: Toploader

Thanks for all the help and advice. Yes, I used a clutch alignment tool supplied in the kit. I removed the pressure and clutch plate. Will attempt to dry fit the input shaft to the bushing. I did check before installing the bushing that it fit the input shaft. I'm sure it is just off a hair, alignme...

Hello All, I bought a complete set-up for a Ford toploader transmission, from the flywheel back to the drive shaft for a 1965 Mercury Comet. Converting from an auto to a 4-speed. Having trouble getting the trans input shaft into the crankshaft bearing. Everything goes together, but I cannot seem to ...

Re: Auto to Manual conversion

I want to pass along my thanks to all who provided me with a wealth of knowledge. Gleaning from others experience always makes my life so much easier. I wish our youngest son could do the same, maybe some day. Anyway, appears since my car is an original automatic trans the power booster is a little ...

Re: Auto to Manual conversion

Once I find the correct Z-bar I might have to bend or alter the upper clutch push rod to maneuver around the power brake booster. Anyone else have power brakes with their 4-speed? Again, thanks for all the help.

Re: Auto to Manual conversion

I checked out your "obsolete parts" catalog from OK and yes the prices are high. The RSP Restoration store sells the same item for about $59.00. I hope to exchange the 1965 part for a 1964 part. Thanks for your help and suggestion.

Re: Auto to Manual conversion

Hello All, I found out the Z-bar pivot bar/pipe for a 1963-1964 Comet is 6 inches long (Part #FC-EC011) and the same part for a 1965 Comet (Part #FC-EC012) is 5 3/16 inches long. Appears some 1965 cars used 1964 parts. Still doing some investigation, but I think the problem has been solved as I need...

Re: Auto to Manual conversion

Could not get that far. In the process of dry fitting all the parts the Z-bar was hitting the left side of the steering column. After searching some more, I might need a Z-bar from a 1964 Comet. This might solve my issue. I will call back to the RPS Restoration parts store and have them measure the ...

Re: Auto to Manual conversion

Yes, 289 engine, power steering, and power drum brakes. My first thought was the wrong Z-bar as well. But through all of my searches it appears the same part keeps showing up for a;
