Identification numbers

Post by postie »

From my identification numbers I think I have figured out what this car was originally from the factory. If I have it wrong I would appreciate any changes.

That's what I would think too, and the 53 is DSO out of Oakland.

Not so sure. Mine DSO'd out of LA. Even though some Comets were made in CA, I don't think it was very many from the little bit of production research I've seen. Something like 10%.

I am sort of confused on where it was built. One set of numbers seems to say one factory and the other number is a different factory....or am I just reading it wrong?

They were also built in Canada, mine in Oakville.
I believe the Canadian serial numbers are different in meaning.
Does the drivers door still have the stamp tag?

The stamp tag is there but....sometime in the past someone did some kind of grinding on the door where the tag is. I am not 100% sure of the first 2 numbers and first letter [7 6 D ]

I also have a Canadian Comet. My 1964 Comet Caliente Convertible was built in Oakville, Canada. It has a VIN code of

976D 64L 093xxx
Paint 5AA
Trim 965
Engine DB

I'd be interested in finding resources to decode all of this. So far everything checks out on my block and head codes. I'd really like to know what the "DB" engine code is. The previous owner said the engine was a 170 but it has 5 frost plugs and according to the Ford Falcon Performance Handbook...that is a 200 cid.
