Considering a 66 Mustang GT dash assembly

Post by SASSY »

I've been thinking about converting the dash in Sassy to a 66 Mustang GT.
If you want to post negative thoughts go ahead but I'd really be interested in thoughts and ideas of a positive nature.
Considering for 3 or so reasons, need a dash pad, want a decent bezel and really like look of it.
I haven't thought if I would replace the metal dash or modify mine or if the Mustang dash pad is too wide.
If you have a 65-6 Stang would you measure how wide the pad is?
Look forward to your input.
I'd rather do it myself if it's done right or not,,,isn't that what hotrodding is all about

Seeing something like this with a Caliente emblem on the glove box door and some red paint somehow.

I always loved the '67-'68 Mustang dashboard layout but probably no room for fit?

Why wouldn't you use a comet dash pad? :? or is that some of the part you really like the look of?

The GT dash pad is really the draw for me plus the cost of bezels etc.
I like the 67-8s as well but way too different.

Why not have your dash pad recovered? You probably could still fit the GT gauge bezel in your steel dash. I had my dash pad recovered in leather with a French stitch along the leading edge. Just a thought……

I have a 66 fastback. From the edge of the metal dash, end to end about 53". If you need something more precise let me know. Just did a quick measurement. I think it would look good in your car. I considered doing this same thing in my 65 Cyclone since my original stuff looks bad and a new 66 camera case finish bezel is so cheap and looks good. My dash pad in my Mustang is a little warped on the ends, it is probably the original. It was in the car when I bought it in 1984.

By the way the 65 Mustang dash pad is very similar, but does not have the little devider pieces that drop down on either side of the radio.

Thanks for the input Jim I like your dash for sure.
Thanks Boss that'll give me a starting point.
The dividers are what does it for me.
Edit
Went out and measured the Comet dash pad. I got 53.5" so very close.

Seems close enough to be able to make it work. 1/4 inch on each side should not even be noticeable.

So is that engine under your hood......
If anyone can pull it off, it's you.
But yeah, probably too wide compared to '65-'66.

Looking at the metal part, the biggest differences that I can see is around the glove box. it looks like the stang has a frenched in area on both sides of the opening;

but maybe you could space the lid back far enough for it to work. if anybody can I know it'd be you Fred.
also you would have your holes to fill where the comet dash bezels attach.
the rest all looks identical . I've seen several 65 comets using the mustang bezel .
