La Carrera Panamericana

Post by comethead »

Another year has come and the Mexican PanAm race is running 22-28 Oct. Im bummed that I cant make this one (again). I was looking through the spanish PanAm website where it has a list of participants and scanning through the Historic C class I see lots of 64-65 Falcons. It must be the Falcons rally racing history. Lots of Mustangs too, but I think thats because there are...well lots of Mustangs out there. http://www.lacarrerapanamericana.com.mx ... antes2.asp
PanAM US website: http://www.panamrace.com/

I bought my first Comet in 2002 (dont laugh Roy...I know Im new) to do this race. I bought it because it was real cheap and was able to take all the cheap Mustang suspension/chassis parts. I was very serious (I still am) about running and finishing this 7 day rally. But work and family have taken priority and my plans were altered; I sold that car (65 HT) for the driver I have now. When I was planning the race I realized I needed at least a 3 man team. 2 drivers and 1 support "staff" with a support vehicle, trailer, spares and tools. I had my team assembled (with the cash to make it happen) and the car disassembled for the build when our unit was deployed to the "sandbox". After that time passed, excuses came and the project lost steam. I was stuck with the car but I fell in love with the Comets lines and the cars performance history.

When the time comes Ill buy another 65 HT, put in a roll cage with killer suspension and brakes, a 2-bbl 289 (race rules) and 4-spd and give them Falcons and Mustangs a run for their money! Hell at this pace my son may end up being my co-driver...and he's 2 years old

Check out the PanAm website, I think theres some videos there of some of those old cars taking turns. Quite a few old Fords.

Ill hold you to that Roy. I hear its a 7 day party at all the small towns where the race ends each day. All the Coronas you can drink....if were not doing a clutch job in the hotel parking lot.

Joe;that 65 Comet is "SICK"!!!! I love it,that price is a steal, you could not build it for twice that!! I used to have my Comet set up for the twisties, custom built steel 15X7s front,15X8s rear with Goodyear Polyglass GTs,screaming 289,4-speed with 4.62s in the 8",used to play up on Decker Canyon Road and on Mulholland Road and harass the Corvettes and such!!! I met a guy from Canyon Country that has a street legal 64 Comet that he races at open track days out at Willow Springs and Button Willow,he had it out at the Santa Paula cruise night. If I could have afforded it back in the day I would have gone road racing instead of drag racing. ROY.

Well well well Roy, I didnt know you knew how to turn that steering wheel. I thought it was locked out strictly for straight line travel. :D
I love all those roads out there. Mulholland, Piuma, Latigo, Decker. I would go out there on the weekdays on my motorcycle and sometimes my little Subaru WRX to have fun. I always planned on dialling in my PanAm Comet on those roads and San Francisquito/Bouquet canyon road in the Santa Clarita area...along with the test and tune days at Willow.
I would have liked to see your Comet set up that way.
And I agree that Aqua 65 Comet for sale was a killer deal, mucho car for the money. I bet (I may be wrong) that I could build a decent canyon carver 65 Comet for under 15 grand. Maybe under 10. I dont mean a PanAm Historic Class C bully, but a good car that could theoretically finish the race and minimize the risk of death by flying off a canyon road.
I see so many Comet HT shells for sale that I want to snatch up and store for the build, but Im biding my time.
