Calvert Suspension System

Post by 383MERC »

Just about done installing the Calvert Suspension on my 63 drag car. Putting in the Caltrac bars, split mono leafs and 9 way adjustable shocks. Can't wait to see the difference it makes. I hope i have enough time before race season to pull the motor and freshen it up. The 351 is not a lot of fun to pull out. I dread it every time! Mark

Suspension is finally in. Had to do a little engineering at the front mounts, but all is good. Motor is pulled for a little freshen up. She's been in 3 seasons and has about 200 passes on her.

Mark, how well do the caltracs fit the comet ? do they need much modification or straight bolt in ? reason i am asking I am running my home made versions & they are showing rapid wear with the extra power & i am trying to work out if i should buy the real thing or remake mine. if they need a bit of work to make them fit i might as well remake the worn bits on mine. also does much setup info come with them ? Thanks John

They fit ok, but i had to change things a bit. The original springs were 2" wide and when i installed the new split mono leaf springs, they wanted me to put in 2 1/2" wide springs. This made the spring pockets a little tight. I ended up running new bolts through from the inside out with nuts on them at the rocker side. I used the large cup shaped washers from the original bolts as washers on the nut end. I drilled the frome holes slightly to accept a 9/16" grade bolt and made sure i got 9/16" hole metal bushings with the springs. I have not got to try the setup out yet. I still have 3 or 4 weeks before i get out. As far as set up goes, John Calvert was very heplful. He is very knowlegable on the suspension, especially in our older cars. This is a very nice quality stuff. You will not be disappointed with it. Hope this helps, Mark

Finally got to test the 63 at the strip yesterday. WOW!! I just put in an initial set up for the Calvert Suspension and the car went 10.67 @124 MPH with a 60' of 1.441! Wheels up about a foot. I didn't even try any other adjustments. Not sure if i want to. Mark

First race of the season last night. The car ran awesome! Best numbers ever. 10.54 @ 125 mph 1.401 60 ft time. Went down to six cars in the quarters and then lost on a $&@# light. Yeah well.........Mark

I'm gonna have to say 1 1/2 to 2 tenths. But, i also freshened up my heads as well. The 60 ft times are a good 5 or 6 hundredths quicker. I'm sure that translates to a tenth to a tenth and a half in the quarter. I can't wait to get out again. The car is sick consistant! I ran two passes to the thosandth. 10.578 @ 124.18 and 10.578 @ 124.19 That's crazy huh? Mark

Hi Mark, sounds like your new setup is working great, 10.5 is a great time. i found the same with mine that it was very consistant with the caltracs , i can run within 0.02 all day. how much preload did you set the bars to start with, i have never changed from my inital setup either, worked good 1st time out.
