New leafs for the 63.

Post by rjones35 »

Thinking about new leaf springs for the 63, but I'm not sure what to get. Macs lists a few different heights with different numbers of leafs. It's a 63 Custom v8 car. I like the kinda old school hot rod look, so maybe a spring with just a 1" drop, so it's not super high. Right now it has air shocks and shackles that came on it and I like the way it sits now. Any thoughts? Any body used the springs from Macs? There's a spring place local to me, price wise they're higher but might be worth it being in town?

The airshocks are the only thing holding the car up. Seems like the springs are really soft.

Thanks. I'll check with them. I did check with Eaton, on their website anyway, and they show them as 2".

Heard back from Tom. He said they switched to 2.5" in 64 unless it was a convertible. 200.00 plus shipping, with bushings. Sounds like a good price. Question is where will my car sit with new, stock springs?

Most times they sit high from what I've heard. People put bags of cement or something heavy for a few weeks to get it back down. Plan on new shackles & bushings . new u bolts allows you to just cut off the old ones ,same as shackles. makes it much easier,,,,emphasis on -er.

Well the front sits high from the new springs, so I guess it would match. Thanks!!

I just my new springs under my 62 last month. I went with 6 leaf and I also have air shocks in the back. I still have to run about 60psi to get it where I like but I have am 8.8 which lowers it an extra amount. I made a post of with a picture I will try to find.

That is on a slight decline with about 55 to 60 psi. I can take a pic with out any air if that helps.

So I think my plan is to get new stock springs from McVeighs. Seems like a good guy and good price. I'll get some new rear shackles, new ubolts, probably new shocks. If it ends up way too high I'll load the trunk with cement, or I think I can use lowering blocks. May address some of the rust down there while I'm at it, or..maybe not. Then down the road if I decide to move the springs in, I'll already have the new stuff. Got me thinking about wheels. Had planned on just keeping stock steel ones, and I still might, but maybe some centerlines would look good on there!! I need to measure what I have first. Actually need new tires regardless I suppose.

I ordered carpet the other day too!! I'm excited about that. Hopefully it'll help make it quieter inside, alot!

ok. got new springs! in the process of installing, got the wrong upper bushings for the rear, so I'm waiting on those. hopefully the correct ones will show up. and, broke one of the front bolts! anybody have a good source? found a couple places that list them for 50-70 each with bushings, which came with the springs, so I don't need. found one place that shows just the bolt for 40 I think, car parts direct. wish they would have just used a regular bolt.
