To tub or not to tub

Post by mercuryman »

The rearend is out. Cleaning up the under side and trunk area. Now that the rear is removed, any suggestions? Tub? No tub? Crites rear leaf kit? Leave it alone. I wouldnt mind some bigger meat back there.

NUMBER ONE!!!
Decide on exactly which wheels and tires you want out back!
Then make the car fit them,,, that will tell you if you need to tub
IMO
Fred
PS
If you tub use the above two poster's threads to build yours
I'd rather do it myself if it's done right or not,,,isn't that what hotrodding is all about

If you decide to tub it take the advice from Sassy... pick out the tire and wheel combination you want to use and design the rear suspension/ wheel housings around them. There is no limit to what is possible but even minor modifications will still help you fit larger rear tires.
When I built my rear suspension I researched tires and wheels then purchased what I planned to run on the car. It took some major modifications but I now have 2.75x60- 15’s on 8” deep offset wheels under my ‘64 with more than enough room to go larger someday. (The car sits low and the wheel opening has not been modified) I built tubs and raised a portion of the trunk floor to clear the rear end housing, the leaf springs have been relocated and the center line of the rear end has been moved 2” to the rear.
Good luck with the project.
