I feel like an idiot having to ask...but...
Who out there has replaced their leaf springs themselves? I have a 64 2 door sedan. I bought new leafs and factory shackles. The eye to eye centerline on the spring is 48.5, the pin to pin distance on the shackle is 3.5, but the center to center distance on the car is 54. My first thought was that the springs were wrong, but they compare favorably to the 40+ year old set on the car that measured 49.5 from eye to eye. When I try to assemble them, the spring isn't long enough to bolt up. I have replaced many-a-leaf spring in my day, but I have never had this problem. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Rod
Wow man, is that a Falcon?
That is basically what I ended up doing. I got the springs in last night, and read your comment this morning. I put the front bolt in first, and used my floor jack under the spring at the pin. I jacked the spring up and eventually it hit the frame rail in the rear. I was not expecting this to happen, but I kept jacking until the spring eye had slid along the rear rail and was properly spaced with the shackle location in the rear rail. Good luck if you can follow that...anyway, I installed the shackle and it went together fine, but this put the shackle in a goofy position as far the angle it was slanted. I did the other side, installed the housing, then the axles, and wheels/tires. As I let the car down onto the tires, the shackles rotated into perfect position and everything was fine. Not what I was expecting, and certainly not what I was used to going through when installing a set of rear leafs. Thanks for your response.
