Hi everybody,
I have a 66 Cyclone GT convertible, would love it to be a pace car but who knows.
Definitely fun car to drive.
Would like to attach a photo but couldn't manage it.
I'll keep trying.

Welcome aboard, Derek! Stacey (Lipripper) can tell you all about 66 pace cars. He's got a NICE one. You can either use a photo host site, like Postimage.com, etc., or you can use the Upload Attachment tab below the field where you type in your posts. The only catch to the Upload Attachment option is the pic size is limited to 1200kb (I think ), so you may have to resize before posting. Give it a shot. We love pics.

Well, we're the minority but they tolerate us. Welcome on.

Re: 66 Cyclone Gt Convt
Hi there,
Thanks for the welcome.
I am trying to identify my 66 GT Convertible.
A couple of questions:
Did all GT Convertibles have bracing from firewall to the front of the engine bay?
I have seen photos of lots without this and it doesn't get mentioned in shop manuals or brochures.
My car has 3 threaded studs and 1 threaded hole in the frame each side behind the rear spring hanger - are these pace car fixtures?
Mine is a 4 speed, non powered drum brakes but has other options frequently mentioned in pace car details - dash mounted tach, intermittent wipers, power windows etc
Another strange thing is that the shop manual doesn't even list an S code engine.

Re: 66 Cyclone Gt Convt
The braces are 66 only. Those studs in the rear are to hang weights. It is my understanding that they were to dampen harmonic vibration. I don't know how well they work. I haven't tried driving mine without them.
Nice ride. Is it a 28 or 29 in the vin? From everything I've been able to find, the 28's are the pace cars. What is the production date and what plant was it built in? What is the trim code for the interior? All the Pace car's are light palomino or parchment, I can't remember which name they used but it is an off white. This is mine below.

Re: 66 Cyclone Gt Convt
Stacy,
Looks good.
Mine is a 28 but the only number I have is on the radiator support bracket.
The other plates were removed for painting and never replaced so I don't know what the original interior was or even if the transmission is original.
Given how cars were assembled in those days any mixture is possible without records.
I have seen a comment about a pace car with a single exhaust, this was in an original photo from the time.
I have seen comments about the 33 official cars having 355HP.
Is it true that 3 were 427s?
It was built in Lorain (code H).
Motor Trend said (in 1990) that only the 33 track cars had frame mounted flag holders and I thought that the studs and threaded hole may be what they were.
No weights to be seen on mine.
It has been an interesting journey so far trying to find out exactly what is what but nothing detracts from the fact it is a great car.
Thanks for your time.

Re: 66 Cyclone Gt Convt
Hi again,
I have attached part of an article from Motor Trend Feb 1990 edition.
Hopefully I haven't breached any copyright issues.
I'm not sure exactly what the flag brackets were but it seems only the 33 pace/parade cars had them.
I'm still not sure if the studs and threaded hole in the frame are the flag brackets.
Strange the article didn't mention the VIN as a possible indicator of the authenticity or otherwise of the vehicle.
Regards,
Derek

Re: 66 Cyclone Gt Convt
As Lip ripper stated above, those studs on the frame are for weights. canister shaped weights;
