Thank you Jim but that page does not appear to cover the 1966 Comet models. None of the codes from my car make sense with the tables on that page. Is there another reliable source of reference? Thanks

Hmm...

Door plate info:
http://www.tpocr.com/lincolnbp6.html

BODY: Body Style = 63H = 2DHTGT
COLOR: Lower Body Color, Upper Body Color = F = Light Blue
TRIM: Trim Color and Material Used = H2 = White/Blue Vinyl
DATE: Production Date = 02L = November 2
DSO: District Code, Order Location = 52 = Los Angeles
AXLE: Rear Axle = 4 = 3.25:1
TRANS: Transmission Installed = 4 = C6 Auto

VIN is confusing:
https://www.oldride.com/library/1966_mercury_comet.html

YEAR: 6 = 1966
ASSEMBLY PLANT: J = Los Angeles
BODY SERIES: 26 = Cyclone 2 Dr GT Convertible ??? 28 = Cyclone 2 Dr GT Coupe :?
ENGINE: S = ???? There was no S code engine that year :?
PRODUCTION SEQUENCE: Starts the year with 500001, so yours would have been number 4480 built at that plant in 1966, which seems like an mighty low number by November since it includes all vehicles built at that plant. :?

Not sure how to explain the ???? items.

"S" code is the 390 Hipo.

And that body code info is wrong.
66 Cyclone GT; 245/60R15's on 15x8's and 215/70R15's on 15x7 Magnum's.

Thanks again Jim, that body plate info makes sense. Do you know if the trim "H2 = White/Blue Vinyl" means the seats were vinyl, or does that mean it had a vinyl top? (It appears that this car had a vinyl top and I assume it was white.)

I have to agree that the VIN info from the oldride.com web site is incorrect, since the car clearly is not a convertible. What is the basis of your statement that there was no "S" code engine that year?

I believe it refers to the interior trim only, i.e. seats, door panels. I don't see anything on the reference that addresses the vinyl top. May have been a dealer installed option?

I based it on the fact that there was no S code listed on the oldride.com site. However, Stacey says it means 390 hipo engine. I defer to him since he knows a lot more about 66's than I do. Apparently just an omission on the website. The big question to me is why does your VIN list the body style as 26 - convertible?

Body code 63H is a hardtop GT. I have no idea why that other website is so wrong.

Stacey, his door plate says it's a 63H, 2DHTGT . His VIN says the body style is 26, which is a Cyclone 2 Dr GT Convertible. Is that body style number incorrect on the website, or is there a conflict between his door plate and his VIN?

The VIN that is stamped on the radiator mount and under the LF fender is the same as the Warranty Number on the door plate: 6J26S504480

Here's one more to play with:

http://www.mercurystuff.com/1966-mercur ... coder.html

You plug in all your data, and it tells you what you've got. It states your car is a Cyclone 2 Door Hardtop GT with a 390 Interceptor engine. Anything beyond this is above my pay grade.

Jim, thank you again for the info. This is good stuff! Any idea where the “Interceptor” S-code engine gets the extra 20 hp over the Z-code (335 vs. 315 hp)?
