Slowly restoring my 66 Comet Caliente

I bought the car off the second owner, drove it on the trailer, took it home, and drove it off the trailer into my garage, and proceeded to tear it down to start my "amateur restoration"....and that was 15 years ago.

64,000 original miles, bone stock 289 2bbl, C4, every invoice from the original bill of sale right on up til the day I bought her. Marriage, work, kids and all that other grown up stuff took over as they do, and time flew by. Time to take a bit of time for myself now and get to work on it. Bit by bit. Here's a pic of it the day I bought it in 1998.....and a pic of it 2 weeks later....oh the humanity...

So now the body is at my buddies place, the engine is at my brothers place on a stand, and the interior, trim, and other bits and pieces are in my basement. Every piece labeled in boxes, bagged and tagged. Let the parts washing, sand blasting, powder coating, priming and painting begin!

Here's some freshly blasted stuff. Thanks to my friend Dave at Dragmart for the use of his parts washer and Vic of Urban Autobody here in Winnipeg for letting me use the blasting cabinet.

And the after results. I know some people might find all this boring but after all this time I'm loving every minute of working on my car :)

Absolutely nothing boring here. Some of us dig painstaking restorations, photos of freshly sanded and painted generator brackets, and even closeups of wiring harnesses, or the inside of a gauge.

The guy I bought my Comet from had the best of intentions for 20 years. He even built a stand-alone garage just to house the Comet and do the work. He never did, and there it sat for 20 years. After I got it, there were times when I felt like I wasn't going to get it done either. But I'd just stop and think about how that Comet must have felt for 20 years waiting for somebody to put a wrench on her. I couldn't let her down twice so I had no choice but to push on.

You'll get this done and it will be a great chapter in both of your lives...

and keep those photos coming.

Keep those pics coming. I love seeing a proper resto.
When I see pics of newly painted parts, I conjure up pictures in my mind of how the car's going to look when its finished.

Thanks guys I appreciate it. Some of my friends think I'm nuts but this is what I've had planned since I bought the car. It may not be a perfect 100% resto because I can't afford it but I'll do the best I can with some primer, paint, and sweat equity :) A few more pics

Repainted all the black on my minty grill. What a total pain in the butt taping it off properly...I'm going to try and preserve the original stampings on the horns. Not that anyone will ever notice...haha!

YOU rebuild that comet,TO SUIT YOURSELF,piss on a 100% resto, they are boreing,,tell those friends that think you might have lost some sense,to get up off the couch and do something productive, anyone can lay and watch TV and fart and sweat!!All your painting and attention to detail is spot on,just don't burn yourself out on work, take your time ,it all will come out in the wash.....your doing good,....POP
