Drive Train Swap

Post by rhtopdown »

Have a 64 convertible Comet. Has 289, Want a newer model fuel injected engine, auto trans (floor shift) and matching rear end. Have heard newer mustang swaps easy. But do not know which years would work or even if I can do this. Help Please

Any 5.0[302cu.in.] engine will fit as they are the same, physically,as your old 289.Modern Transmission,as in Automatic would be the AOD or AODE,try to get the trans with the engine along with all the wiring and accessories!! ROY.

Roy, will the AOD require a modification to the tunnel, if so what is required?

The AOD is a LARGE transmission,it will take some tunnel mods, header mods, and the floor brace needs to be either removed or severily trimmed. The biggest issue we found when doing one was the speedometer location and getting the tailshaft 'UP' in order to match the driveline angle of the original trans! If you do not match the driveline angle, you 'WILL' have vibration issues, this is from experience, not conjecture!!! Just bought a 63 S22 with that exact set up. Will be removing it soon to put a 289/toploader back in. Where are you located?

It's an 89 EFI 5.0 AOD w/B&M Quick Silver floor shifter. Leave an email. I can send pics and vid of the car running. Jim

So will you be selling the 289 setup? If so, what trans do you have now? 4 speed?

I put an explorer 8.8 rear in my 63 fairlane. 31 spline, 373 gear , limited slip, n disc brakes. Just cut drivers side down to passenger side lenth and install a passenger side axle in. will work with overdrive, but more gear is better.
