Stock Deck Height for 65' 289

Post by ddmrjm »

All, what is the deck height for a Stock 289?

Reason for asking is related to the headers that I already had to customize from Sanderson to fit around the Rack & Pinion from Flaming River.

Looking to change over to a 347 Crate motor and I need to make sure the Header stays in the same spot as it is really tight.

8.206'' same as most 302's. some mid 70's 302 truck blocks were 8.229''. so even if you had one of those truck block would only be .023 difference.

JohnO, thanks for the quick responce.

Do you know if the aftermarket heads from Edelbrock and others have the same distance from the centerline of the cylinder bore to the exhaust mount?

I would think this could be one more variable that I need to make sure is close as well.

If you or anyone else have more details please let me know.

I'd be guessing but I'd think it was close to same as stock. but No ,,I don't know for sure. I have edelbrock heads & didnt notice any difference . My doug's headers were tight but I made them fit & with the borgesen ps box which made it a little tighter. I finally ground off a little of the corner of the ps box, which voided the warranty of the box but by that point I didn't care. I was dealing with a Z bar too so a few bad words slipped out ,,,, no, they were blasted out  .

Roy, do you still have the stock shock towers?

As you know header clearance is a big issue with our Comets.

Any pictures would be awesome to see.

I have a 347 in my 65 with dougs headers, still has the shock towers. I have Afr 185 heads and it all clears. I don't have power steering though.

The rpm 5.0, rpm, and performer rpm should all have factory location exhaust ports, they normally say if they have moved or raises ports
