Tailshaft seal removal 3.03 3 speed

Post by luc3ch »

Tried to get the old seal out tonight using screws in the side to yank on, old screwdrivers to pry it, and vice grips. No luck. It is really stuck.

And now I have it all torn up so no turning back.

Any ideas?

can you get anything between the housing and seal to collapse the seal inward?

Yeah chisel it and destroy it. It will eventually give in.
I've removed many in small pieces.

See if you can fit a hacksaw blade or a narrow coping saw blade in between the shaft and the seal. you might be able to cut the seal so it will collapse together then should come out easily. i have done it that way with the tailhousing off but not while still in place. They do make a special tool to pull the seal but it probably isn't cheap. maybe a tranny shop would have one you could borrow. Any shops around that rent tools?

Thanks guys I will just keep chiseling away at it then. I quit early last night because it was 90 in the garage and my son offered me a beer to come inside and watch Top Gear with him. So, you know, priorities.

Pep Boys loans tools but I doubt they have a seal puller. They usually let me behind the counter to tell them what I need and pick it out.

I always beat it with a screw driver toward the shaft enough to get a screw driver between it & housing & prize it out. Also have knocked a screw driver into it then prized it out.
no mercy on seal, just dont beat the trans.

Found several tools on ebay for removing a seal. Some cheap and some not so cheap. Here's a cheap one that with a little modification should be able to get into the trans to hook the seal to pull it out.

Found another one that looks like it would work but don't know what the dimensions are or what it would fit.

Well Harbor Freight has these, they may pull one seal out or they may last forever but it is an $8 gamble

Might work if you can get it in and can hook the old seal.

Found another seal puller that might work and not too expensive.

Finally took some time with chisel, hammer, old screwdriver and a little sweat and got the old seal out. Once it decided to let go it just popped out. But it didn't give up without a fight.

Got the new seal in and am getting closer to bolting everything back together for a neighborhood cruise.

Happy Fourth everybody!
