Hipo 302 Carb Suggestion

Post by comethead »

I need suggestions for my 64 Falcon road racer.
Here's the specs so far (may change slightly):
289 block with Boss 302 forged steel crank. H-beam rods, forged 10:1 pistons and a main cap girdle.
Mechanical Isky cam with 540" lift http://iskycams.com/cart/index.php?main ... cts_id=548
Comp full roller rockers on ported polished original 289 heads. Headers. Screw in studs. Big tall Victor single plane intake (I think...gotta find it) and a rebuilt dual point Mallory distributer.

3.80 gears. Close ratio 4 speed toploader.

I'm hoping power will be decent...I'm more concerned that the engine will hold together at 6-6.5k RPM over and over.

I have no brand preference for the carb...and I can learn to tune anything.

Any suggestions?? Thanks!!

Isky recommends 650-750 CFM carb for this cam.
I like the idea of a double pumper with mechanical secondaries.

Am I out of the ball park on this??

A Victor is probably a wee bit BIG on most 289's   ...an out of the box Vic Jr will outflow (most) ported, factory iron heads by a decent amount. I'd roll that way or hunt down a decent deal on an Offy Port-O-Sonic. My all-time favorite SBF intake. I'm using a Weiand X-Celerator on the 302 build since I found one local for a steal. Cleaned up the plenum and smoothed the runners a bit but did not open 'em up.

I opted for a 600 double-pumper since it'll be a 99% street car. For yours, I think you're right on!! A 650 mech secondary and let it buzz!! If buying new, the QuickFuel carbs are great IMO.

A little similar I've got 3.89 gears, will be using a T5 and some pro-ported iron heads (fell into a DEAL!), about 9.3:1 compression and a decent roller cam. Since yours will be living at higher RPM's bigger won't hurt ya!

I keep wanting a reason to get one of the Summit carbs. Kind of a modern Autolite...all annular boosters, top cover, etc., but use modern/ widely available parts. Too bad the smallest mech secondary model is a 750cfm. Maybe on the 331 WAY down the road!  :D

Thanks Rocket!
I'm not sure what the intake is now. Gotta dig it out. It's damn tall though!
So I'm on the right track. I have a clone 1.12" C5OF-J 4100 carb that's been jetted and boosters modified to mimic a Hipo carb. At 600cfm ya think that one will do it? It's bought and paid for and I was planning to use it on the Comet with a hyd Hipo cam but I have no problem using it if it'll work. But I don't want to limit the engine at higher revs.

I also like the idea of the Summit carb. I thought they had a 650 as well?

Thanks for the reply amigo!

I don't think Summit sells a mech secondary smaller than 750. Heck, I think since you're largely talking about sustained higher RPM use you could probably tune a 750 to work well...maybe not so much for cruising though!! What was the ole rule of thumb..."run the biggest carb you can tune for good low-speed driveability"... Well, something like that!!

The Autolite will be probably limit ya a bit but it could work. You planning on running an AFR setup to monitor air/ fuel ratio? I'm gonna roll a setup...they're down in price enough and I'm curious. Always tried to guess close and tune driving it. You just don't want it running lean!!

If I owned it, I'd try it but be ready to make a swap!

Ok update- it's a Victor Jr. SBF intake. That should work right? It's Roy's old 289 intake. He ran it until he split the block and stepped up to a 351W!

I'm not planning to run any Fuel/Air data stuff. Gonna try to keep it old school. But...what system are you looking at?

Also, I don't care about low speed anything to be honest. It's going to be track only so I'm limiting my expectations to high RPM only.

Will do! But...how big is too big?

For reference- 65 Shelby GT350 289/4 speed came stock with a 750 Holley! The only difference between the Shelby 289 and a Hipo 289 was the high rise intake, carb and headers.

Keep in mind that that shelby was built for street & maybe some play at the track . I dont think a 750 would be too big for what you want to use it for. you might be feathering the throttle thru the turns but your always going to be downshifted & ready to hammer it coming out of the turns. you wont need off idle power, just mids & highs. I've never road raced but I use to run from the cops a lot, bout the same thing aint it? I didnt use very many of the mids, mostly WOT !:P

I like your thinking Johnnie!!
So we're narrowing it down: 750 double pumper Holley with mech secondaries.
Hell I'll try anything once! Well ...almost anything

A Vic Jr will work great! And being Roy's...heck yeah I'd run it!! A 750 will make more power...!!

Summit has their refurb carbs cheap...the mech sec 750 is $279! That said, I don't think annular boosters are gonna add anything on a sustained high rpm motor. That and a Holley or clone will give you center-hung floats and depending on the model, better tuneability.

IIRC the Shelby carb was a 715cfm vac secondary. You know, a 700DP might be a good compromise. The good thing about the 'tweeners (600, 700, 800cfm) rebuildable ones are often cheap...folks seem to buy way more 650, 750, and 850's!!

I'm looking at an Innovate wideband setup, though I'll grab an Autometer if a deal crops up (match other gauges):

Thanks for the clarification on the Shelby! I knew it was something big!
The wideband looks interesting. Gotta keep that in mind.

So I guess I'm in the market for a Holley 750 dp with mechanical secondaries. I'll check into those refurbed units at Summit.

Thanks again.

I really like my quick fuel carb. I use a 670 w/vac sec. on a 306 w/550 lift cam. For race I do agree with 750 DP, and go chokeless. That's what I used years ago on a 289 drag car . worked well despite most said it would be to big.
