Autolite 4100 C4GF-AB Carb , what should I do?

Post by chaseman »

Hello everyone , I've come across a Autolite 4100 C4GF-AB carb. Now according to various sources it is a carb off of a hipo 289 4 speed Comet. I'm really curious if anyone has some knowledge about this carb , I'm debating if I should use it or if it belongs on a numbers matching HiPO 64 Comet instead of my 71 F250.

Thank you

Just looked this tag up in the Mannel Book and according to that this tag would have gone with a 289 4v with automatic transmission. There are separate tags for HiPo's so based on this, I'd say that this was not a HiPo Carb and that F250 should be just fine.

The Hipo carbs were all "O" carbs. C3OF, C4OF and C5OF. O for Fairlane...which was the original car to receive the 289 Hipo.
G indicates Comet.
I bet the C4GF carb is real close to a Hipo carb- the main difference being the boosters. And later on the manual choke.

According to Manel, there were some C4ZF, C6ZF, C7ZF and C8ZF used in Mustang and Fairlane HiPo's

Finally found th -AB carb on Mustangtek.Says Hipo but nit sure that is true. And if it were a true Hipo it woulf not be a carb with any economy as they were all jetted for performance. Even still the C4GF carbs are all rare and hard to find and very good choices. I run the C4GF-AF version and am vey happy with it.

The C4GF-AA and C5GF-AB are not HiPo (High-Performance) carburetors. The 600cfm carb. size and "K" in Mercury VIN causes the confusion, especially since those were both characteristics on a 65/66 HiPo (K-code) Ford Mustang.

The information on Mustangtek listing the above carbs. as HIPo is incorrect. The Mustangtek administrators have not been open to making valid corrections when I have contacted them countless times. Same holds true on other corrections with supporting documents/pictures.

Alright , thank you all for clearing that up. I was confused by it being a 600 cfm but the internet saying it was for a 289 , because small blocks usually got the smaller carb unless it was a hipo. But anyhow , I'm glad to get some good info by some folks more in touch with Mercury stuff then I am.

I'll stick the carb on my truck's 390 then , it'll go real nice with my Mercury High Pent Valve covers lol

The early SBF's used the 600 cfm 1.12" version on many engines as well as the smaller 1.08" version. The 4100 Hipo carb was intended for all out performance. Economy was never considered.

Even though the C4GF-AB is a 600 CFM the stock primary (stamped "L" on bottom) and secondary (stamped "B" on bottom) boosters were tuned for a 289 application. The stock jetting was #48 on primaries and #55 on secondaries. If it were me I'd probably start with #50's on the primaries for today's fuel and your engine size.
