installing 302 and t-5

Post by gearhasher »

I would like some information on installing a302 and 5-speed in a 65 comet.I would like to mate the transmission to the engine first and put it in rather then installing them seperate. Any suggestions would appreciated

It's pretty tight in there. I don't know.

Gotta be more room than in my 63 and it was a pretty easy fit for the most part. Just the usual wrangling it in there, front end way up and adjust the chain to a good angle and stab it.

Yup thats how I did it. Used an adjustable lifting bar to tilt it until it went in. Still pretty tight though. I wouldn't want to try it with a tilting bar. Would also help if you didn't have any pullies on the front of it.

Hey gearhasher ... what did your bell housing and T-5 come out of? I'm considering the same conversion on mine. Are you using hydraulic or cable clutch?

I just did the same thing only with a AOD hooked up. It wouldn't go in with the headers on though.

Jim - You can make about any T5 work, but IMO the '94-'95 5.0 or V6 units are the way to go if you want to use a cable! Clutch fork entry is lower so header clearance is better. Otherwise, any 85-93 'Stang V8 trans is pretty much the same...the later ones (90-93 IIRC) are somewhat "stronger".

I got a great deal on an upgraded, worked-over '93 T5 and after a lot of poking around and talking to folks (Modern Driveline, Dougs Headers, etc.) decided to go hydraulic for the clutch!! :D

I've only done it on the one car, but I couldn't imagine doing it in two pieces. mine is a t5 out of an 86 mustang, used the bellhop sing and shifter it came with. I did use the modern driveline hydraulic clutch kit. works great!!

I used a Mazda Miata slave and a Wilwood master cylinder of the same bore size - 3/4" I believe. Took a little engineering, but cost about half of the Modern Driveline kit.

Did the Mustang T-5 put the shifter too close to the seat/console? Did you have to use a S-10 tail housing to move it forward?

The mustang T5 puts the shifter right below the cross brace. It has to be cut. I installed subframe connectors prior to cutting the hole, so I didn't worry too much about cutting the brace. I have buckets so the shifter didn't interfere with the seats. I am on the lookout for a suitable console that will fit around the shifter/shifter boot.

A stock console works well after the application of some hacking tools lol

Roy always said the brace neeeded to go period...couldn't get correct driveline angle with the x-members that let the T5 hang low to clear it. Looking at mine - I can see it. He ran low 10's w/o issue so I believe him when he said it wasn't structural...! :D

With buckets of any kind, shifter location will be fine. Bench - eh, only seen a couple pics & it was CLOSE!!
