I didn't have the luxury of my roller 302 apart as I bought a machined block .
On page 110 of my car tech book "How to Rebuild the small block ford" mentions an oil slinger is to be slid over the crank shaft. And that if running a double roller you have to flatten it out.
there sees to be a lot of chat about the necessity and actual installation of this. Some comments on people who have torn down motors that they don't remember seeing one ,some say Ford abandoned these at some point ,some say its not necessary and some say it depends on your type of timing cover and wether you run a single or double roller timing set as to whether it will even fit.

You don't really need it but I guess it couldn't hurt as it helps lube the chain, keep some oil away from the seal. They may rub on the double roller like you know already. If you don't have one, don't worry about it.
