engine swap
engine swap
I am swapping a 1995ish 302 built to a 347 that I recently bought from a friend in my 1964 comet, I am wondering if I will have to change the motor mounts and will my stock 3 speed automatic bolt up to the engine, I plan on buying a tremec TKO 600 soon but I just want to bolt it up to the stock trans for the time being to drive it here and there.
Re: engine swap
If your Comet was a V8 car the engine will bolt in, the factory ‘64 transmission is a 5 bolt pattern and will not fit the 302. (or any post ‘64 289)
If you have a 6cyl. car the steering and brakes are marginal at best for a V8 swap. (Not recommend)

Re: engine swap
Yes, the engine mounting is the same for pre ‘65 and post ‘65 small blocks. The transmission bolt pattern is different on post ‘64 engines. If you install a 302 you will need a six bolt bell housing or automatic with a 6bolt pattern.smithhe wrote:so the engine will bolt up to it? my car is a v8 carA/FX wrote:If your Comet was a V8 car the engine will bolt in, the factory ‘64 transmission is a 5 bolt pattern and will not fit the 302. Stock exhaust manifolds should work. You will no doubt change the generator to an alternator.

Re: engine swap
are there companies that make a bell housing that will mate with my transmission to make it a 6 bolt?
Re: engine swap
No,smithhe wrote:are there companies that make a bell housing that will mate with my transmission to make it a 6 bolt?
Your C4 is for an early small block. If you want an automatic you need to source a post 64 six bolt bell housing C4.
A stock C4 may not stand up to abuse of a 347 so keep your foot off the floor.
Re: engine swap
im probably just gonna bite the bullet and buy the tremec, thank you for the help thoughA/FX wrote:No,smithhe wrote:are there companies that make a bell housing that will mate with my transmission to make it a 6 bolt?
