Additional info on the Shelby 260

Post by 62Cometman »

I was just perusing ebay looking for anything fun i could find on the 260 as i wait for my finances to catch up. And came across 2 interesting thing first being a Hot Rod Technical library "book" about the "new" small block ford and "new" v8 lines offer by ford for a few bucks which i quickly snatched up as i love that old school literature. I got it and was reading through and it gives some great info on a lot of specs for the 260 and 289 both and also discusses the FE motors to some length as well but they also discuss modifying these engines, they lean heavily on the shelby offered speed parts for the 260 and suggest swapping out the stock 289 stuff with parts offered from ford for their HI-PO 289 brethren. The thing that caught my eye was the Shelby intake offered for the 260 it allowed you to mount up 4 weber IDF carburetors essentially giving you 1 carb barrel per cylinder. and some of the other odd changes made by shelby to increase performance port and polished heads and mirror finish combustion chambers machined aluminum retainers and polished valves 289 springs and a heavy duty damper. Which leads me to the second thing i found on ebay, someone manfuctureing a replica of the shelby weber style intake for the SBF applications. Its a little pricey around $300 and each weber is about 175-200 per carb set so the whole set up would like set you back a decent bit but i thought it would be super cool to run the 260 with the shelby style setup mounted to it. I dont know how i would setup the linkage or how much of a PITA it would be to tune but i would think it should perform better than a standard 4 barrel and matching intake, with loss to driveability and mpg of course. but talk about cool factor.

what do you guys think? yeah or neigh?

here is a complete kit much more expensive that buying it individually

Webers are great carbs. no choke though. I've got a couple sets on 2 different air cooled engines.

And what's with 2 cooling hose nipples coming out the front of the intake?

There was a guy at PF in 2017 (can't remember his name, but from the Knoxville, TN area) that had a near-concourse level 65 Cyclone that had about as much Ford-available Cobra equipment as was available back in the day. He had the four Weber set up. You can see that the two water spouts were connected together with what appears to be a cast manifold, and there was a stand alone thermostat housing between that and the rad.

Good luck finding that piece of plumbing.

That is a fine looking engine but I don't like the idea of pressurizing a plastic fuel filter.

Thanks for the photos!
I think for the time being im just gonna go with a 4 barrel and standard intake, but im definitely keeping this in mind for future changes when i want to spend all my time tuning carburetors
