X in the lifter valley
I have an old FE style block, It has an X cast in to the lifter valley. Now I'm a small block guy and I really don't know a whole lot about the FE or 385 seris engines. Can anybody help me out with this? My dad seemed to think it was a 428 block he had pulled down years ago, but due to his age he sometimes gets a little fuzzy when it comes to memory.

Measure the bore and if you have the crank look for a number on one of the counter weights. Like 2U.

Re: X in the lifter valley
I have the rotating assembly, I know that it is a 428 set-up, I'm just trying to figure out if this block is the 428 block. My dad did some racing back it the old days. He had a whole bunch of FE stuff. This is the only FE style block that is marked with the X in the valley. I just thought somebody might have some insight I don't have. Thanks

Thanks Roy. I'll give that a try
Re: X in the lifter valley
look in the freeze plug area inside the hole you should see an embossed 428 stamp..you then would indeed have a 428.

You can also look on the flat area on the back of the block for a "A" or a "C" in the casting. This helps tell weather or not in is a cobra jet or PI motor. Mark
