Steering Wheel for '63 Comet

Post by Flip »

We have just about finished the complete restoration of my '63 Mercury Comet Custom, 2 Dr. Hardtop Coupe. We have been looking for a steering wheel for the Comet, to no avail. At the car show this past weekend in Moultrie, Georgia, we talked with folks who have a lot of Ford experience. We found that a steering wheel from a F-100 pickup truck was compatible with the Comet. I found one that has cracks and has been painted several times and purchased it. Our thoughts are to seal the cracks and repaint. I have not taken the steering wheel to the garage where the Comet is, but I am worried that the wheel seems awfully large....16 3/4 inches, approximately, in diameter. Doesn't that seem quite large for that car? Feedback/suggestions would be appreciated. I have been told that finding a steering wheel for the Comet is like finding hens' teeth. For my liking, a steering wheel does not have to be an exact match with the original....just want to see what you folks have used and the diameter of your steering wheels.

Also, I have in the past not been able to post images here, but will come heck or high water, share images of this car soon as I appreciate the kindness shown by so many in this forum.

I don't know what was a typical size for early comet wheels though cars of that era tended to have large wheels. You could feasably use a wheel from a 60 to 64 falcons and some broncos and maybe econoline trucks which should fit dimensionally and electrically.

Horn rings should be fit ok though may not have the right center emblem. Some can have the emblem changed though.

If you have a wheel with cracks they can be repaired and painted and look good as new.

If anybody is looking for a nice 65 Cali wheel there was one posted on Mercury Comet Part's FB page earlier for $100. Hard to find one nicer.

66 Cyclone GT; 245/60R15's on 15x8's and 215/70R15's on 15x7 Magnum's.
There's nothing like the sound of a pushrod V8 singing at the top of her lung's.
