63 Comet - Dash Speaker

Post by Misha604 »

Hey all

Looking to replace my original centre dash speaker with whatevers going to give me the best and loudest sound.
With only one speaker I'm obviously not looking to blow the roof off, but the one I have right now is pretty old and tired.

Ive looked at the dual voicecoil options but am unsure whether its compatible with the original radio?
I read somewhere that you can wire them in "series"?
I believe my radio is 8 Ohms?
But this is all speculation based on some online hunting.

The radio and everything else is all original.

Any help or experience would be much appreciated!!

Thx
Misha

If you're sticking with the original AM radio, I believe I'd just get a hi-quality replacement single coil and get on down the road. You may be able to wire up the dual coil, but I'm not sure it would sound any/much different.

FYI, there are folks who can modify that AM and make it FM, Bluetooth, etc without changing the look (in case you're wanting more options but keep the original look).

Ok thanks for the reply!

Ya for now Im just going to get the speaker sounding as best it can and get driving. Next year I will look into more options like having the radio upgraded.

Is my radio 8ohm?
I believe most modern speakers are 4ohm, but I'm pretty sure I can source an 8 ohm one.

Any other options I should be considering? Or any tips on sourcing a high quality 8ohm speaker?

BUMP

I found this post from 2018 and am now in the same situation.
It looks like it ended with no answer?

I’m now looking for a single 5x7 dash speaker for my 63 Comet. Mine looks like someone blasted too much Conway Twitty. 🤪
Having the AM rebuilt to stock so I just need a basic speaker.
Anyone bought one themselves and can recommend where they bought it from?

Thanks for any help,
Doug

I think I have one that will fit . I put it in my 65 for a while with my stock am. I'm not reusing it because i had my radio re worked with 4 channels now,& 4 new speakers so the dash speaker kinda got knocked off hind tit. I think it came out of a 96 taurus that I parted out. And as Groover said above ,aint gonna sound much different on am. I'd let it go for the price of shipping to you,,, if you want it pm me your address.

oh i forgot you may have to drill holes ,think it has 4 holes, almost forgot that but size wise it'll fit. I'll look at it after while & get a pic.

Thanks so much for the offer, but I think that one from Melvins will work just fine.
I appreciate the link. 👍

Yea As cheap as it is no sense in putting an old one in .I was in the shop & looked at the speaker & my car. originally the car had one like yours with a screw in each end/side & the speaker from the taurus had four holes. but I had drilled 2 new holes in the perimeter of the taurus speaker to match the car & saved from drilling on the car.

I didn’t photograph the speaker before installing it but JEGS sells a dual speaker for the dash grille and I was able to get it to bolt right in. It works well with the retro sound Bluetooth stereo.

Update…..
Just an FYI-
Melvins pulled through with a great replacement for my 63 Comet mono dash speaker. The two mounting holes are an exact fit!
The new speaker is shallower as you can see.
The only negative unfortunately is it’s made in China, but what isn’t anymore. 😭
Thanks to all for you help and input. 👍

The cage is actually deeper than stock, difference being the magnets.
The new ceramic magnet is a bit cleaner sound than the old Alnico one. Not as 'warm' but clearer, cleaner @ higher volumes.

LOL. I have no idea what AM stations we have? Sending my radio out monday for a $180 stock rebuild. He said it will take 5-6 weeks.
So yesterday I drove my new hitchhiker and my wife to what I thought was supposed to be a small car show at an ice cream/hamburger joint.
I got down there and not a classic car in sight. Turns out its NEXT Friday! LOL. Mrs. Pickles drove great though.

Doesn't take long to rebuild but I imagine he's swamped. No better time than now for highly skilled labor.
My electronic tech passed away last year, sadly. :(
