I almost pulled the trigger on one in eBay but then ready someone said beware of interference with muffler, but person didn't state what year.
It seems easier to put in a nice new clean tank than try to clean and seal (if leaks) the one that is on it.
The one I am interested in is this one.

newbie at all this so thanks in advance for any advice.

Re: 61 Comet gas tank replacement question
I don't see an issue with that tank, appears to be a stock replacement so there should not be an issue with muffler clearance. I am not sure on the early Comets but my '64 tank is offset to the left for muffler clearance.

I did mine ('63) a few years ago, and as you've been cautioned, the 16 gal tank didn't clear the muffler, but the 14 gal version did (in the pic you'll see the passenger side--where the drain plug is--slopes in toward the bottom, creating room). 14 gal is more expensive unfortunately. don't know why, except they probably make and sell fewer of them.

The other thing I would check on any of these is the distance from the edge of the tank to the center of the tank filler pipe--once I got the 14 gal tank, which fit nicely underneath, I found the filler pipes didn't line up and I had to have a welding shop move the one on the tank.
good luck
