62 comet, Miata Drivetrain Build

Post by Dimmwatt »

Hey guys,

I got a call from my sand blaster today that had a gentelman present that pointed me to this site. Thought I'd post

Building a dependable cruiser for my wife. I'm well under way in this project so you wont have to wait long to see results.

The Miata's wheelbase is 25 inches shorter and 200 lbs lighter than a comet. The width is dang near identical. The 1.8 packS similar torque ratings and higher horsepower than the inline 6. My doner had a 4 speed auto.

The fab work to get the miata engine, suspension, subframes in is all done. It required modification of the firewall, tunnel, frame rails, and shock towers. I was also able to get the AC unit to fit under the dash. For the haters....Yep, I cut the dash. I have no need for a stock radio...and it was just plain in the way.

A teaser...Off to lunch

Rock and roll! Looks good man. No worries about the dash or any of the cutting. It's your ride.
Keep the pics coming.

definitely like your build! your doing a great job! and screw the dash, for some reason these cars are not worth beans even though they and their parts are scarce as hens teeth! I say screw the dash and enjoy the a/c!

I knew Sassy would like it. I also vote to build it the way YOU want to. But I have to ask, what is the thing that looks like a big microphone? A snorkle? :?: :?:

No Haters here. Always great to see somebody do something that hasn't been done before (and put a Miata to good use).

My neighbor had a miata with a 5.0 HO and 5 speed that ran great. I like this opposite effect. I think your vanity plate should be "CUT UP".

Thanks for the great comments. I like the one about putting a Miata to good use. I agree, I like the cars, but dont have much use for one since I dont fit. I'm 6'6"

The Snorkel Mic is an intake tube turned verticle. It will eventually live horozontal with a less obnoxious looking filter. Just had it laying around. I may even cut a hole in the fender and rout the filter into the wheel well so a filter wont be seen in the engine compartment.

Thanks again,

Casey

As a fella who's fabrication skills are limited to pounding with a hammer and twisting with pliars I really enjoy threads like this where you guys show how it's done. Great work

I'm the guy who saw your car at Primo's..

I was driving by and my head twisted on a swivel, like "Is that? Can't be.. A whole Comet on a trailer getting ready for clean up?"

I actually circled the block to ask him about you and the car, since I see so few.. Glad you found the site, and this looks like a very interesting project. Keep the thread coming. looking forward to progress!

Are those 17x8 wheels? Look like maybe a 245/55 tire? She sure has a nice stance!

That 'awning/canopy' of yours is cool - made with PVC? I'd do something likt that but we get some pretty crazy winds - at least your location looks like it would have some wind protection.
