1963 1/2 S22 260 V8

Post by ist4yfr3sh247 »

Hey guys I've had my baby now a few months but she's giving me grief with the transmission..

Some put a 2 speed shift column but when I inspected the transmission I seen 14 bolts. Is this the original c4?

As far as I know, and honestly, I don't know much, but I believe the '63s that came automatic all came with the FordAMatic 2 speed..

So the C4 would have been swapped in at a later point..

Don't have mine in front of me, but I believe the C4 has 11 bolts on the pan, and it was released in 1964 (hence the name C4).

I reserve the right to be wrong though.

That is correct. The C4 pan has 11 bolts. Mark

I think 14 bolt is a fmx trans but like Groover I reserve the right to be wrong.

Merc-O-Matic 2 speed has 14 bolts on the pan. Very flat pan, hardly no depth.

If you have trouble shifting until warmed up (about 10-15 minutes) the internal rings are dry and a rebuild is necessary, but worth it.

This guy has all the parts you'll need...

Here's a picture of your pan...

Also check for vaccum leaks at the modulator and the rubber line that goes to your intake manifold...

Also filter is only "cleanable" not replaceable... Usually not the problem.

Parts plus labor around $1000-$1200 if rebuild needed.

The FMX trans has the integral bellhousing. Those came later on. I think 1968. Mark

The FMX (1968/ ) has a separate bell. The PX (2S) (1959/1963) has the one piece bell/main (alum) case.

Thank you all for the input.. It's been a real battle but I'mholding on.. She's running well. But I don't believe I'm adjusting the carb correctly..

Also I'm getting this strange squeal squeak cling clang sounds like it's the brakes but people are telling me it's the ujoints.. I just bought the rear ujoint today and I'm wondering if that's a one man job.

Lastly.. I'mdripping loads oil Tranny fluid out of what seems to be the torque converter.. What should I do after I remove the inspection plate.. I'mtold to.inspect a valve but since it's my first crack at it I decided to ask advice.before I.proceeded

That plate inspects nothing. It's to unbolt the Torque Converter from the flywheel during trans change. Take my advise and get the trans rebuilt per my previous response before you smoke the tranny.

Carb adjustment easy if carb is clean or just rebuilt.

Turn both idle adjustment screws all the way in (clockwise), then thurn them out c/Clockwise 2 + 1/2 turns. Start car. Turn one screw in at a time until idle drops (becomes rough) then back out again 1/2 turn. Do the same for the other idle screw. Idle should be around 700-800 in neutral.

Get that trans rebuilt or you'll be sorry...

I keep it filled and I get about 100 milesa day. Shifts well but if I can do d the right place I'll have it rebuilt..

Thank.u for the correct carb adjustment..

Right now my outer front wheel bearing busted on me.. I bought a bearing set from AutoZone of course they didn't fit

My baby won't start after I blew my stereo amp..

I recently took out a bad amp.. After doing so my car won't start..

I changed out the distributor cap rotor plugs coil then she started with a jumpstart.

Now the next day I can't even jumpstart her. She tried to fire but it sounds like the batteries dead.

Any ideas? The comets stranded on the side of the road
