wheel alignment specs for 62 comet
wheel alignment specs for 62 comet
Hey folks,
I have been lurking in the forums for a while gaining all the info I can on my car but I was wondering if any of you guys/gals know the wheel alignment specs for radial tires? I'm changing a few of my front end parts because I put a 302 in and want to be on the right track once I'm done.
Thanks

Buy a factory shop manual on ebay for around $25 and the answer to all of your questions will be at your finger tips. I recently purchased a quick trick something or another to align my cars for $119 and it is very helpful.

Don't know about 62, but in 64 the settings are
Caster .5 deg plus or minus 1/2
Camber 1.5 plus or minus 1/2
Toe in 1/4 inch (27 degrees)
Can't imagine you'd go wrong with that.
I set my caster a little higher to help with centering and since we now have wider tires than in 1964.
Hope this helps.

Woops, my bad.
The Caster says 1/2 deg +- 1/2 deg
Camber is +1 1/2 deg +- 1/2 deg
Toe in is 1/4 - 5/16 inches
So I guess the first two are positive although only the camber is marked with a plus sign in front. And it was a typo above when I said caster 1.5 (fixed now)

Re: wheel alignment specs for 62 comet
I was wondering. My camber was 1.5 positive and I could get that on the driver's side but not the passenger. I could only get .5. It state's that there should be no more than a half degree from side to side so I had to go back and lay the driver's side back to 1 degree.

Thanks for the starting points. Saves a lot of guess work. Putting it on the alignment machine this weekend as well as dropping in some headers and a carb. tune-up.
Re: wheel alignment specs for 62 comet
Here's info I got yesterday from a reliable source. Here's his web site and an article, then the specs he gave me.
Comet Bruce

His name is Marlon, Been doing Mustang and early FORD/Comet set-ups for 30 years.
The Manual specs DO NOT work for the Radial tires.
1/2 neg camber both sides
----------------------------------------------------
L/H (Drivers side) Caster 1 1/2 deg +
R/H (Pass. side) Caster 2 deg +
----------------------------------------------------
Toe in 1/8" overall

Thanks, I figured the radial specs would be different from the bias but couldn't find them anywhere.

Re: wheel alignment specs for 62 comet
That radial spec. is interesting. Before I changed mine I was 1.6 and 1.5 negative camber. It didn't drive bad at all. Now I am the 1 and .5 positive and I think it drives better but this could be all in my head. I will leave it alone and see if there is any tire wear from being positive on the camber. If so, I'll lay them back in a bit.

If you haven't read this article over at Comet East, it may help too:
http://cometeastcarclub.org/Articles/fr ... gnment.pdf
I contacted Dick Harrington for his numbers and he pretty much says what Comet Bruce says.
I don't personally understand the neg camber, but that's what smarter folks than me say.
I've read several mustang sites that say "as much positive caster as you can handle and still turn the wheels" (pos caster helps with centering, but can become a bit much to overcome especially with manual steering).
