I experienced a little project creep today



I know the hood was black last week but I was really not happy with it so I sanded it back down, re-primed it , blocked it and primed it again, somehow in the whole process I decided to sand the cowl so I had to prime it as well. I know I will have to re-do the cowl after the windshield comes out, someday.

Not shure I will do it, but is there an easy way to paint over chrome (plasti-dip?)? I was thinking about painting the wiper mount plates satin black as well, but maybe I will leave them chrome Actually was considering the wiper arms black too, the stainless trim around the windshield would remain bright (chrome)

Probably a bit shiny for satin but I got carried away with the finer and finer sandpaper.



I rubbed through in a couple of spots and the paint is way too thin, a few spots of orange peel still there. I think it will hold it for now and when I paint the rest of the car I will put a couple of good coats on with a gun and the hood hanging up so I can spray it level, or at least on some sawhorses so I can get the back edge better.

That is the most paint that my Comet has had on the hood since I have owned it

Ok this time I think I am done, well at least until tomorrow when I decide it should be different.

Right now it has the sheen I want, it has good coverage but I did a lot of things wrong with the HVLP gun, it was my first time using one and I really didn't know how to set it, I also cannot get the gun fully disassembled, the internal nozzle will not come out, I even bent the little cheap wrench that came with the gun trying to un-screw it, I figure for $10 I will use it until it stops up and get a new one (HF Purple Gun) Anyway it spattered so much it is textured but I decided I kinda liked the effect, but we will see.



I need to order the little barrels to attach the "Comet" badge and I need some clip/studs for the trim.

I think I am ready to tackle the grill next

x2 & if you bent a wrench get a bigger one!! I’ve never used an HVLP gun either...still have the original ole sprayer & detail gun bought WAY back. They probably are a better mousetrap though!!

It is really funny to see that trim back on the car, it has been off of there for 30+ years (that is so hard to believe) this picture is posted someplace on here but is the day my wife and I had our engagement pictures taken and we will celebrate 30 yrs next year (yes the Comet was in our engagement picture)



Hopefully this time I will get the car the way I have wanted it for a very long time, I know I am probably doing things wrong and out of order, but just trying to get something accomplished. It may not be perfect when I am done but it never was intended to be a show car (well and I guess it won't be).

The roof is going to have to be addressed very soon, even if it is a temporary job, the trunk lid as well, but part of me wants to find a replacement trunk anyway and not repair the bad spot on the bottom of it.

I need to order the little barrels to attach the "Comet" badge

I have a little treasure chest I have kept for the last 35-40 years (looks like a metal bandaid box a lot) all tiny bits of the Comet went in it, the barrel mount sleeves (or whatever they are called) were in it so now my script is attached properly, I had to drill my holes out the proper size because I had actually Bondo'd there a little bit, but it is firmly attached now.

I still need to get the trim clips there were only 5 out of 8 I am sure I broke some removing them 30 years ago, I really don't remember

Need to confirm the size, but the ones I have in there now are not too great and need replaced as well, they seem a bit pricey but the first set would be a better deal because I am sure I will find more of the same with other fasteners.

The stamped tin nuts is all I've ever seen on trim fasteners.

Those stamped tin nuts are probably the best thing for the job, having a little flex will act like a lock washer.

If you don't like the tin nuts, you can buy them with the better(solid) nuts.

Pretty sure the supplier I get them from has the ones with the better nuts on them. Think the longer ones are like $1.69 ea and smaller ones may come 2 to a bag for the same price. I can check next week for ya if you give me the sizes.


Edit* just looked at your links again. The first one, the assortment box isn't a bad deal. About 88 cents a piece. You could just buy the solid nuts, 10-24 at a hardware store.

Those stamped tin nuts are probably the best thing for the job, having a little flex will act like a lock washer.

They work ok,, the ones with sealer work better. But they are only really catching like one thread. I do know they come off easier during disassembly. But think the solid nuts with the built in washer work better. A little body calk under the nut will seal them.

Getting closer to being true to my Sig I got the grill painted today.



I am waiting on the trim studs to arrive that ordered because I need to replace every one (4) of the middle trim mounts I broke two and the other 2 are missing the little spring arms, I also broke one of those clip on nuts that hold the grill in but I think they are pretty easy to come up with.
