Re: Durability Run 1964
Couple of observations toward the end:
1. As one of the drivers leaves the pit to resume the run, you can see a cigarette in his mouth.
2. In an over-the-shoulder scene of one of the drivers you can read the tach. Looks like they were taching around 5300 rpm.

Jim,
Gotta love the smokes, I mean how else could they complete 100,000 miles in one go!
Awesome advertising, thanks for the share!

wasn't many non-smokers back in those days......would've been hard to find a no smokeing crew.... pop

Re: Durability Run 1964
Do you suppose they essentially ran WOT the entire time to achieve that average speed? Jam your foot to the floor and steer...

All Comets start out as dreams...
Re: Durability Run 1964
They never did say how fast they were running to average this speed, they said the pit stops figured in this and I would assume they weren't driving 100 MPH in a hurricane, my guess would be they were in the 125 MPH range.Groover wrote:Do you suppose they essentially ran WOT the entire time to achieve that average speed?
I wonder if they made any changes to the line after this, maybe that is why '65s got improved steering geometry. They kept that basic platform for so long from the '60 Falcon/Comet through to the Maverick/Comet in the '70s until replaced by the Fox platform in 1980s.
See Ya,

Re: Durability Run 1964
5300 at 125 sounds about right.
when I first got my Comet, 289 4 speed 3.25 gears g78 -14 rear tires I ran the car to red line in 4th, as I remember it went off the end of the speedo
well before 5500 when the valves started to float.
up there its kinda like boating your just guiding it along!!!
