Re: 65 Comet Steering
Had to google earth Cutknife,, was never there. Worked on the railroad in Biggar when our son was born(just turned 45!) is about the closest.fair67 wrote:Fred
I have been here in Illinois now for 26 years. However I grew up in a small town called CutKnife Sask 100K from Lloyd and I went to MVMR at Kelsey in Saskatoon and got my Mechanics Journeyman through them.
Seems to me Redhotcomet went to Kelsey too,,?
Just outta high school I worked just down the hill from Kelsey at the Canola (rapeseed) oil plant for a couple months.

Ok I just learned something I thought you were joking until I googled it.poboyjo65 wrote:A roller bearing kit for the idler arm?
Re: 65 Comet Steering
Yes mine has it but of course it was so rusty the threads stripped.poboyjo65 wrote:I thought even the ps 65 cars had the 2 bolt idler mount?
Re: 65 Comet Steering
Should make steering easier, not fighting the twist of the rubber bushing.fair67 wrote:Ok I just learned something I thought you were joking until I googled it.poboyjo65 wrote:A roller bearing kit for the idler arm?
Another tip is to add grease fittings up high if you put the bearings in.
it's the time to think about it for you !

What kit did you use?poboyjo65 wrote:Should make steering easier, not fighting the twist of the rubber bushing.fair67 wrote:Ok I just learned something I thought you were joking until I googled it.poboyjo65 wrote:A roller bearing kit for the idler arm?

I cant remember for sure. at the time I had trouble finding it, I think it was delta bay mustang in california. opentracker has them. one of their kits needs a sleeve that they have for 25 more $, & they have a NOS one for about the same money

Rocket had trouble with one, I'm sure he can tell you which one NOT to get!

Re: 65 Comet Steering
I got the Rare Parts version...had to have a spacer machined to fit in the arm since I had little confidence in the bearing assemblies not pushing inward. Also drilled/tapped to add another grease fitting that’ll actually work to get grease up to the top bearing.... And guessed at assembly since the instructions are......yeah....
Sooo...it’s worth doing; get the OpenTracker setup! And you’re free to use as much foul language as it takes to get the OEM rubber out. It’ll be a lot.....

Re: 65 Comet Steering
x 2. Good tip! if you just install the lower fitting only grease will just pump out the lower bearing & never make it to the top bearing. if you drill the idler arm it self, just over halfway up ,& tap it for another grease fitting ,it will pump grease out of both bearings.Rocket989 wrote:I got the Rare Parts version...had to have a spacer machined to fit in the arm since I had little confidence in the bearing assemblies not pushing inward. Re: 65 Comet Steering
I would like to get the kits you guys have but they are expensive so I am going to try something that is less then 10.00 and see if it works. I like the idea of bearings so I found some thrust bearings and I will put them between 2 washers and see what happens. I will experiment with the old idler arm and if it works I will do it to the new one. if it doesnt I will be out 8 bucks and put the newly bought idler arm on and go with that. I however am stuck until my new bracket gets here. I understand if you guys laugh but if you think I will run into major problems trying this feel free to let me know.
