African Safari ‘64 Comet

Post by A/FX »

As promised last week here are the pictures I took of an original Safari car at the vintage races at Laguna Seca race track near the Monterey Peninsula in California. I am not saying that it could not be a rebodied or highly modified plain Jane Caliente that is dressed up as a Safari car but the documents sure seem to be real.

Great pics!
I read on the Fran Hernandez FB page (run by his kids) that all but one of the Safari cars were left in a warehouse somewhere in Kenya after the race because of customs issues on getting them back home. Mercury deemed them too beat up to try to save them so they stayed...and were lost to history.
Seems like the one that came home was the one in best condition. The car that did the rounds for PR apparently was a painted up clone that was new and was displayed at the 64 (or 65?) Worlds Fair.
