140MPH Speedometer

Post by kellycj »

I've seen a post or two from the past concerning running the Mustang 140mph speedometer in a 65, but never saw any definitive answer as to whether it worked for anyone who tried it? My speedometer is pretty much toast, and would like to replace it with the 140mph unit, but not if the calibration of it isn't going to jibe with the current speedometer gears - especially the one in the trans. Are these a "go", or should I just default to "old reliable"?
Thanks.

Speedo driven gears are dirt cheap and a breeze to change.
I wouldn't let that one stop me.

It's the drive gear in the T5 I'd like to avoid. I'm tempted to try it out, and hope I could find a driven gear that will work with it.

The t5 gear is easy. I always put a black 6 tooth internal T5 speedo gear in my cars because I like tall gears. Just tap out the roll pin in the shifter, take off the tailshaft and change the speedo gear. It is held on with a small clip, then reassemble.

I installed a 140 mph Mustang speedo in my first 65 Cyclone with a T-10 trans. Didn't change any gears and it read accurately. I don't know about the T-5 gearing, but if the original 120 speedo was reading accurately with the gears in the T-5, I would think the 140 head would, too, since they both read accurately with a common set of gears in my experience.

Im running the 140mph speedo as well and I didn't change anything in the trans. All worked ok.
There’s a seller on eBay that cleans, tests and sells original units. I got one for about $75. I’d stay away from the reproductions

Thanks for the replies. I rebuilt that T5 just a short time ago; changing the drive gear wouldn't be that big of a deal (compared to the complete rebuild), but I'd rather not have to roll around under it again anytime soon if I don't have to.

I'll look around on ebay for a rebuilt unit - are the aftermarket ones junk? I've got a good bezel I bought off a guy a while back that I'd like to reinforce with some thin fiberglass mat and resin when I change the speedo out. Would like to do it all in one shot while it's all out.

Unless you've done that successfully in the past, I'd recommend experimenting on the old bezel first just to make sure there isn't any warping/dissolving interaction between the resin and the 58 year old plastic. :o

Not sure if they’re junk but they’re probably Chinese so not sure about longevity. For the same price I got a clean original that was lubricated and checked. Ill try to find the seller.

Edit: here’s the seller I bought mine from https://www.ebay.com/itm/124764990540?m ... media=COPY
