1965 comet fuel gage

Post by navychief »

Hi, wondering if anyone has had this same problem . fuel gage seams to work normal but never goes below half mark, turn car off needle goes to zero ,turn on needle goes to proper level 3/4 or full. turn off power and turn back on to acc ,and that shows the correct level. when you turn on acc the level is 1/4 difference . please note, I do have an extra gage that I can try out . thank you all ,

Run and ACC should give the same readings unless there is something funky going on in the ign sw. You can try grounding the fuel lead at the sender which should peg the gauge. Then you can connect a 10 ohm resistor from the sender wire to ground. Should read at full mark. then try a 70 ohm resistor and should read at or just below the empty mark. That confirms the CVR and the gauge and wiring is good. A bad ground between the tank and frame which would mean a bad ground on the sender and can do strange things. A bad ground between CVR and ground can also do funny things. 65's and up have a ground wire to the cluster but earlier years depended the cluster mounting screws for a ground. Add a ground wire if in doubt. Also add a ground wire between fuel sender in tank directly to the frame.

replace the tank sending unit and forget about it,,,if the needle goes to full when shorted out......much simpler...pop
