66 Comet 2 door sedan
66 Comet 2 door sedan
A friend of mine bought a 66 Comet 2 door sedan the other day. I thought all 2 door sedans were either 202's or Capri's. All the chrome was off the car but there was some Caliente emblems in the trunk but no 202 or Capri emblems to be found. The seller said the car was originally a 289 3 speed car. It also had a 9" and front disks. Did 66's have a disk brake option or did someone upgrade? It also had a fiberglass Cyclone hood along with a regular stock hood. I'm thinking there was a donor car or some parts swapping over the years. Anybody else have any ideas about this car? We will eventually check the VIN number and see what that tells us.

Re: 66 Comet 2 door sedan
I'm pretty sure all Capri's were hardtop's. I don't know if there was a 404 series in 66. Also, doubtful that someone would buy the lower line of car with disc up front. And I've never seen a 9" behind a 289 either.
66 Cyclone GT; 245/60R15's on 15x8's and 215/70R15's on 15x7 Magnum's.
There's nothing like the sound of a pushrod V8 singing at the top of her lung's.

We thought it was kind of odd for the 9" to be in there also. I forgot to mention there was a pair of 390 emblems with flags in the trunk, another reason we think there was a donor car. Did 66 or 67 have 390 flag emblems? Maybe someone put some fairlane parts on the car. Another thing I just rembered, there was a piece of trim in the trunk that goes between the tail lights and it said COMET on it, not caliente or cyclone. It was missing the "T". What I don't remember was if there were holes in the tail panel to mount the trim piece.Lip Ripper wrote:I'm pretty sure all Capri's were hardtop's. I don't know if there was a 404 series in 66. You can look at the vin to see what motor it came with, 5th digit. In 65 you could get a 4 door caliente sedan but not a 2 door caliente sedan. I have run across 66 4 dr capris, here is one;
http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2774648/1 ... ury-comet/
but judging by this page which only list a 2dr sedan as a 202
http://www.classiccarcatalogue.com/MERCURY%201966.html
also only 2 dr hardtop & 4dr sedan calientes & capris are listed , no 404s are listed
& if it has the original door tag it should have the axle code.

According to this, http://www.mercurystuff.com/1966-models/index.html, the 202 came in a 2 door or 4 door sedan, while the Calientes and Capris had a 4 door sedan, but only 2 door HT.

A while back ,I tried to buy a 67,it was 289 column shift 3spd 2dr,had 202 on the frt fender,,,,it had bucket seats with a consol..but the rear seat did not match up with frt buckets,,so I would say they came from another comet......it turned out to be not for sale...that's as close as I can get on the subject pop
