61 144cid. automatic Head Bolts torque
Almost afraid to ask, but I just reinstalled the head after it went to machine shop. torqued head bolts according to shop manual. cold torque, 55 then 65, then 75. the gasket (felpro) has stamped on it, "NO RETORQUE" "NO SEALANT". After a few heat / cold cycles, is it necessary to revisit torquing t...

Re: 61 4dr. 144 cu. engine Muffler issue
Yes, well 2 concerns, one is the heat, and 2, the muffler 'sits' right against the side of the gas tank. every little bounce and bump is going to cause the muffler to wear on the side of the gas tank. At the moment i don't have the long pipe hooked up to exhaust manifold, when i put that part togeth...

Re: 61 comet exhaust manifold heat shield
So someone who has a 170 engine on a 61 comet finally came through. part attaches to bottom row of exhaust manifold bolts just to the right of the exhaust manifold outlet where long pipe hooks up. I can post a pic if anyone is interested. Won't know until I get it all back together just what it is s...

Re: 61 4dr. 144 cu. engine Muffler issue
I installed the tank about 5 years ago, pretty much same shape as old tank. The bolt holes all lined up, even the filler neck lined up perfectly with the gas inlet neck. At the time I thought it was all good with muffler clearance, but that was because muffler and long pipe was just sitting on the r...

61 4dr. 144 cu. engine Muffler issue
So I got a new muffler from Waldrons (plus tail pipe), the original long pipe to engine was actually in good shape. Had gotten 2 replacement OEM replacement hangers. Finally got around to installing muffler only to discover it bumps up next to gas tank, which doesn't seem good, its as if the hangers...

Re: 61...144cid engine 'head' install questions
The machine shop did mill the head, but he said it was extremely small. fractional what they milled.
hopefully that won't affect engine performance.

61...144cid engine 'head' install questions
Got the 61 head back from machine shop. not much work needed on it. Looking for Tips and tricks for re-installing head. I have made some guide bolts so gasket and head stay lined up when lowered. My new gasket is from Fel Pro, hope they make good gaskets. Let me know if not. New gasket says use 'no ...

61 comet exhaust manifold heat shield
removing the head and exhaust manifold on 61 comet 144 engine. There is this 2 1/2 by 2 inch flat metal piece that looks like it deflects heat from the manifold. Does this have a specific name? purpose. Do I need it? Can't seem to find a replacement online. Guess I could get someone to fabricate one...

New exhaust system
61 comet. 144cid. sedan. So where are people getting their new exhaust systems from? I need all new, except exhaust manifold. Is Waldens
any good? I had emailed them last year, they seemed pretty pricey considering it would be shipped from Michigan to Florida.
Thanks. john.m

Re: 61 144cid 2.4L head bolts source.
These are used head bolts. From what I've read, you should not re-use the head bolts. (for various reasons).
I was looking for new. (and the picture only shows 12, there should be 14).

61 144cid 2.4L head bolts source.
Hi all, Does anyone have a good source for head bolts for the 144 engine? 1961. Are there other years like 62? that would work? or the 170 size engine. Googling everywhere and just not having good luck. headbolts.com has a set for 109.00. seems pricey and they are for the 200 size inline 6. (hate as...

Re: head removal 144 engine 61 comet
have not checked the valve stem clearance in boss.
I did see from the company that made the stem seals(Fel-Pro), (and other sites), that the valve stem seals actually does move.
I have the 'umbrella' kind of seal, which is identical to the originals.

Re: head removal 144 engine 61 comet
I did replace all the valve stem seals about a month ago. The original ones were all busted up, only one was intact. Thought that was for sure the issue. So I slid the stem seals down over the 'valve stem guide'? but when I pulled the head i noticed all the valve stem seals had shifted upward. Not s...

Re: head removal 144 engine 61 comet
so, with the head removed here are 2 images of cylinder one. there is alot of oily gunk, you can actually push on it and squeeze some oily stuff onto finger. cylinder 2 is not as bad, cylinder 3 is more like 1. 4,5 and 6 are ok. bit burnt black looking but dry. The head gasket looks ok as far as I c...
