Re: 1962 Comet Build Thread

Think I figured it out. Pin 1 on the alternator is the signal to tell it to charge. I have it connected at the voltage regulator (that has been gutted) which also has the starter solenoid connection so basically its always sitting at the battery voltage. Gonna try connecting to the + side of the coi...

Re: 1962 Comet Build Thread

Need some suggestions. I have been draining the battery pretty quickly. I converted the Comet to a GM style alternator. With the red and white pigtail connnected to the alternator, I am drawing 3.6 Amps. Disconnected its about 0.07 Amps. I have the diode in place and it checks with a multimeter test...

Re: 1962 Comet Build Thread

Quick update. Horn is now working and the turn signals. I kept fiddling with the turn signals and after uncovering some electrical tape I realized there were a couple of wires making an intermittent connection. My advice to anyone working on an old car is learn how to properly splice and solder. It ...

Re: 1962 Comet Build Thread

Thanks for the input regarding the Shelby drop. The front is sitting up a little bit relative to the back. I have 1 inch lowering springs in the front and 1 inch lowering springs in the back but i think it dropped a little more with the axle swap and the new spring perches. I like it but want the fr...

Re: 1962 Comet Build Thread

Update. Been working on some small things today trying to get the Comet road worthy. I set the timing and ran the vacuum line for the distributor advance. Seems to be working pretty well. Also ran a new vacuum line for the windshield wipers and I was happy to see they started working! Also installed...

Re: 1962 Comet Build Thread

Got the Comet back home yesterday. I really like the sound of the Flowmaster 40's. It has a little rumble. Unfortunately, with the exhaust on, now I can hear the exhaust leaks near the manifolds. One was a bolt hole so I plugged it. The other I am still looking for it. Couple of pics. Stay safe. Exh...

Re: 1962 Comet Build Thread

No left turns. I like your thinking. I have some Gremlins that are starting to show up. Heater fan didn't seem to be working but I will start troubleshooting once it gets back from the Muffler shop. She is loaded up and will be headed to Wedgewood Muffler in Zebulon NC (near Lizard Lick) tomorrow mo...

Re: 1962 Comet Build Thread

The Comet is moving and stopping using her own power! I scared my neighbors for sure but she is moving. I drove it out of the garage for the first time. I leaked a little more brake fluid on the garage floor than I care to admit but I think I have it fixed. Still lots to do. I noticed the horn would...

Re: 1962 Comet Build Thread

Quick update. Pushed the Comet out to clean it and the garage up. Been finishing up fuel lines and waiting on some brake hoses to finish the Ford 8.8 swap. We celebrated my youngest daughters graduation from high school yesterday and the Comet was a big hit with her cousins and you cant even drive i...

Re: 1962 Comet Build Thread

Hi Mike.

I purchased some small adapters from the Flop Shop Offroad. Waiting on them now. See below. They are used for Jeeps and looked like they would work for Comet. I'll let you know how well they work.

Re: 1962 Comet Build Thread

The Comet is back on the ground. The rubber bushings for the rear leaf spring put up a good fight. I had to cut the outside lip about 1/2 off (I used a PEX cutter for water lines) and then grind down the upper shank of the shackle to get them to press into the body of the car. This board (R Jones) d...

Re: 1962 Comet Build Thread

This strikes close to home since I have been laying under the Comet a lot lately. Harbor Freight has recalled some of their 3 Ton and 6 Ton jackstands with Item numbers 56371, 61196, and 61197 made from 2013 to 2019. Mine do not match the serial numbers but they sure do look the same. See below: HF ...

Re: 1962 Comet Build Thread

The real problem is that stuff sits in the spot where my wife parks. While the weather is good, no issue. Rain like today = issue. Waiting on that axle is bugging me. I ordered some new spring plates today (Currie) and a universal joint 1310/1330 that may work. I guess we'll see. I am looking forwar...

Re: 1962 Comet Build Thread

Quick update. The new "bolts" for the front leaf spring location were perfect. The large collar is pressed on and the shank was the right size for the bushings. I think its a quality product and made in the USA, just a little expensive. Still waiting on the rear axle. I had to push them to agree to ...
