Re: 1964 Mercury Comet Caliente Build
Morning. Been cleaning up the 289. It’s a little crusty but planning to drop it in and see what happens. Anyone used a Torker intake on a 289/302? Seems to be a wide variety of opinions about how well it works. The clocked carb looks a little different…vintage. Garage is getting out of hand again. 7...

Re: 1964 Mercury Comet Caliente Build
Picked up the motor and trans yesterday. Going to need some cleaning for sure. It turns out that the transmission is a Ford-o-matic rather than a C4. It has the 6 bolt bellhousing and is cast iron. Anyone used one of these in a Comet? From some research it seems to be a bit of a unicorn made for low...

Re: 1964 Mercury Comet Caliente Build
Good news and bad news. After trying manual rack and pinion, offset bushings, motor spacers, banging on headers, etc I decided to let a weekend drag racer enjoy the 427. It’s bitter sweet since I was pretty optimistic for a while and then realty started to set in (sorry Lou). I could have notched so...

Re: 1964 Mercury Comet Caliente Build
Hi Lou. The 427 is staying. Gonna have to massage the headers a little and drop the rack and pinion about 1 inch. The C4 fits without modification. Catching my second wind putting it together. Updates soon I hope.

Re: 1964 Mercury Comet Caliente Build
Making some progress. My buddy came over to play this morning and we dropped in the 427. Planning to lower the R&P a smidgeon. Happy to see a little bit of progress! 83EBDA97-E404-410A-B723-8336CBDFA481.jpeg D7F93F80-739A-4F3B-A9A9-11CF28272BC9.jpeg 363D80FE-F179-4C1F-A017-CF0E16932B79.jpeg 6E1ABAC8...

Re: 1964 Mercury Comet Caliente Build
Making a little progress. I purchased some bumper brackets from a nice guy on Facebook marketplace at a reasonable price. A little grinding and some POR-15 and they look pretty good. The wife’s clothes rack came in handy. 286D70ED-44E0-4406-B939-60B2A4AD7A8A.jpeg Also took the pan off the motor but ...

Re: 64 Caliente on BAT
It makes a good template for putting mine back together. I downloaded some pics to help once I get through painting.

Re: 1964 Mercury Comet Caliente Build
Hi Fred. The color combo is going to be polar white with a red spear. The seats are red. I found one on Facebook that I really like that had this color combo with white seats. It was for sale for just a couple days and then I couldn’t find it so it didn’t last long. Mine will have the tear drop hood...

Re: 1964 Mercury Comet Caliente Build
Thanks JT. I am going to pull the pan and modify it for clearance. Hope it works! Like you said it’s a process to get to the end result. My buddy Greg came over yesterday after work to help sand and get ready for more primer. I used Eastwoods low VOC epoxy primer. It’s not perfect but looks to be a ...

Re: 1964 Mercury Comet Caliente Build
Started the test fit tonight. It’s gonna be a tight fit. The oil plan has one sump too many I think to clear the rack and pinion. The good news is that I could squeeze a sheet of paper between the water pump and the radiator. The header on the passenger side looks like it will fit. Driver side will ...

Re: 1964 Mercury Comet Caliente Build
Been working on the Comet past couple of nights. I pushed it out of the garage. Even without a hood, engine, lights, dang she looks fast just sitting there. Pushed out of the garage.jpg Started work on the front fenders. I am using the Eastwood Low VOC epoxy primer. Having a few issues with the spra...

Re: 1964 Mercury Comet Caliente Build
Got a new Cleveland style alternator bracket in this afternoon and i am thinking that it will work. There is a little clearance for the water fitting on the head so that was good news.
