Is it the stock sending unit. I remember looking at an Autometer gas gauge and and the stock sending unit not working. Something with ohms or voltage making it read wrong.

They do make headers that fit. Higher end brand and the name escapes me but most also notch the shock tower. I have been told the shorty headers don't work. The headers in my 65 comet 302 block are old (from the 80s) Headman 351W for a 66/67 fairlane but I had to modify them a bit. If you search way...
