Road Trip
Road Trip
Next Thursday (6-30-22) a group of us will be heading out to DesMoines Iowa for the Heartland Nationals. It is just over 350 miles one way from downtown Franksville to DesMoines, I have been doing some maintenance to the Comet in preparation for the trip. I was chasing an oil leak which turned out to be a rear main seal, I now have that issue under control. I also wanted to make sure the engine was in tune so I do not burn too much of the $5+ a gallon fuel so I decided to install an AFR gauge and adjust the carbs. After multiple times of changing jets, power valves and fine adjustments I believe I have the engine running for peak efficiency and drivability. Having two Holley’s to get in sync is a little tricky but I think I have found the right combination.
I mounted the AutoMeter AFR gauge under the dash using a strong rubber covered magnet, this allows me to move it out of sight if I do not want to see it. The gauge matches the other gauges in the dash and the tachometer.
Hopefully my preparation will make for a trouble free trip.

Gives us some updates on your voyage. Is that a lokar gas pedal?

I will update during the trip. The gas pedal, brake, and clutch are all FoMoCo as is the cable to the carbs. (I am not a big fan of Lokar products)Boss/Cyclone wrote: ↑Fri Jun 24, 2022 9:30 amGives us some updates on your voyage. Is that a lokar gas pedal?
My goal was to keep as many FoMoCo parts as possible. (I know I am strange!!)

Re: Road Trip
That makes two of us, I'm the same way.
Speaking of, I think I found a simple solution to the accelerator linkage problem, keeping the stock pedal & bellcrank w/hi-rise intake manifolds.

Re: Road Trip
Me too, I just don't recognize that pedal with the strip of metal showing down the middle. I put a complete 66 Mustang pedal setup in mine.A/FX wrote: ↑Fri Jun 24, 2022 2:26 pmI will update during the trip. The gas pedal, brake, and clutch are all FoMoCo as is the cable to the carbs. Sharp eye
Yeah, keyed ignition switch.

Re: Road Trip
Actually some of you are almost correct. The keyed ignition switch is gone, in its place is a pull switch that is “on” then momentarily “on” to actuate a relay that powers the starter solenoid. I do not really need any keys for the car, the door locks and trunk are operated by a key fob. The ash tray is gone, in it’s place are the four power window switches that are also connected to relays. The panel to the left of the steering column is choke, fuel pump, and an accessory port for my phone or GPS. The switch to the lower right of the steering column is for the door locks. I used all ‘64 Comet knobs on all the switches so they would look more like original.
See what happens when you build a car in your sleep! A lot of the details came to me in dreams, I would jot them down before I forgot what I dreamed about! (That is how the battery box came about)
Thanks for the interest!

Re: Road Trip
That’s really cool the way you’ve set it up, very nice. Where’s the tunes come from, and is the a reverse lockout I see?
Re: Road Trip
Thanks! The tunes come from under the hood. I really never listen to the radio even in my daily driver or my shop so I decided to not reinstall the original Comet Am/FM radio that was in the car. Yes that is a Hurst reverse loc out, next to it is a Hurst shifter glove that I have had for decades.

Re: Road Trip
I've never turned the radio on in my car w/ the engine running. Probably couldn't hear it, anyway. Hah!
