See what happens when you pollute a Comet with a bowtie...
(This happened a while ago but was just posted)

I had brake failure like this driving my Cyclone home the day I bought it.
Downshifted to lock up the tires, skidding through a light. Thankfully I kept my wits and didn't crash it.
Happened in front of a brand new AutoZone store. Idled into the parking lot and bought a bottle of brake fluid, limped home.

Joe,
You were fortunate, and made the right moves. Brake failure has to be scary, I have not experienced it and never want to. When I was building the Comet I did not cut corners on the brakes, four piston Baer calipers on the front, large single piston on the rear with drilled and slotted rotors at all four corners and a mechanical parking brake.
Watching that video was scary, hopefully the people in the van they hit were not injured.

Yes, I was. It's been 35 years since the Cyclone incident. My first failure was a scarier one 10 years earlier. My pedal hit the floor coming off the river bridge in traffic in my "68 Mustang. I instantly killed the ignition and started downshifting. Thankfully there was a wide drive into a vacated lot just past the foot of the bridge that I slid up, spinning the car to stop.

I would like to upgrade the original drums on the rear of my '63. In the meantime, I drive in the countryside to have fun.
I've forgotten a lot of things over the years but you never forget brake failures.

Seems like the signs were there…the owner didn't take them serious enough. Hell brake fade would have happened no matter what drivetrain he was running…he was riding the brakes the whole time!

Exactly, first when the throttle is sticking you stop and check it out. Riding the brakes is not any kind of solution.

$200,000+ into 1,300 HP Car and no Emergency brake???? Really?

My car will have a emergency brake, I am putting drum brakes on the rear of my car just so I can have a real mechanical E brake.
The little brake shoes that go inside rear disc brake rotors are not E brakes, they are considered parking brakes, and not the best in a emergency situation. Rear disc setups with the e brake built into the rear caliper are much better but can be temperamental. And not a big fan of the looks.
For me the rear drum old school E brakes work the best if needed in emergency.

Glad no one got seriously hurt. Could have been worse!

To be quite honest, no one has any business driving a blown car in traffic. Those builds were popular many years ago with guys out west in desert areas for good reason. This build was a disaster waiting to happen. :?

Scary!
Some time around 2000, My 17 year old son sometimes drove the Comet, The wife insisted that I install seat belts in it. I found some at the salvage yard, blue Chevy S10 retractable shoulder belts. Still in the car today.......Oh, the Humanity!
I have the Granada conversion brakes, master cylinder, all new parts. The emergency brake in my car isn't very good
That video makes me want to upgrade.

The last hooray on this thread. The '65 A/FX Cammer Comet w/ single reservoir MC and Galaxie drums all the way around.
It ran on the strip @ 700 hp. It was deemed unsafe by the drivers and the flip-top Funny Car was born out of necessity :?

I have watched that episode a couple of times in the past. Dennis Gage is such a squirrel!
Years ago he did a show on my friends prewar VW collection, my friend still talks about how “of the wall” Gage was. Another friend of mine was interviewed by Gage for a segment on the TV show, his opinion was the same. That aside, the ‘64 big Merc is so cool! I’m not that crazy about the Comet.

Years ago I think it was Projim64(stunning red prostreet 64) posted a pic of this car in a fab shop. Roof was already chopped and made into a Carson I think, blower sticking out of the hood and a very proud Russ kneeling beside it,,, then nothing and I looked and and asked to no avail. Then on a FB group this past winter I seen a pic of this finished STUNNING !!!!! custom and knew instsntly it was "the car" Other than the bowtie I loved all of it!! The stance was killer the big wheels were perfect on it and all the little changes he made I loved.
I messaged him and he returned conversation, turns out he lives about 10 miles from where we used to winter holiday, wish I'd a known.
All the car needed was to be sorted. He didnt get enough miles on it to clean out ths gremlins.
Whats wrong with a blower on the street?
I really hurt for him, practically a lifetime of effort towards a vision lost on a small mistake.
I'd rather do it myself if it's done right or not,,,isn't that what hotrodding is all about

for one reason I wouldn't run one on the street would be this big section of view that the driver doesn't have. the camera is centered so the driver sees a little more of the center than this view, but even less of the right side of the road.A big blind spot. had he not had his view blocked he might have had time to choose that empty far right lane, but he couldn't see it & that hole closed up quick. of course I''d never put a chevy motor in a ford much less have it sticking up there where I'd have to look at all the time. But that's beside the point. & I do feel bad for the guy & all involved.JMO on the question. but a big blower is just not me & it's not that I dont like them ,they are cool as can be but too much cleaning & polishing, nope not me.
