OK, Jim. Pidgeon Forge is only another 215 miles from Nashville. That distance excuse is starting to crumble.

I wanted to put a few more miles on the car before Wednesday when I am headed to Lebanon, Tennessee for the Triple Crown of Rodding event at the Super Speedway. This will be the longest distance I have driven the car so I want to make sure all systems are go.
Safe travels to you, man! I was wondering when you were going to really show off your amazing work on the Merc :D
You'll be in good company but have an excellent example that's pretty unique!

One of these years I have to make it to Pigeon Forge, we will have to see how the car does on this trip. I am traveling with two ‘34 Ford Roadster hiboy hot rods, we plan to travel secondary roads and shy away from interstate hiways. My Comet has a 3.50 rear gear which should be OK. Hope the weather will not be a factor, in the past I have driven the car in rain but cleaning the undercarriage afterwards is time consuming and no fun. (And much easer at home on the lift)

Thank You Joe!
I believe I have prepared the car so hopefully it will perform well. The event looks to be interesting, I have been to quite a few major events but not always with a car. Showing up with a Cyclone will probably be unique in a sea of belly button cars, the cut off date is nothing newer than1972 so that should eliminate all the late model stuff.

Safe travels Jim. Are you a participant or a spectator? A lot of well known builders there, I’m sure if you’re participating, you’ll be one of them! All the best.

Hey Joe, I like the words you mentioned above, “Work on the Merc” would fit well on a T-shirt with a picture eh….

Thanks Lee,

I am a participant. When I saw the coverage of the inaugural event last September I knew it was an event I wanted to attend. I send an application immediately and received confirmation that I was #68. I am familiar with most if the builders who will be there and have seen quite a bit of their work at other national events, a lowly home built Comet will just be a background to the big guns.

Don't sell yourself short, Jim. Quality is quality, no matter who builds it or where it's built. Anyone who sees your car will recognize that. 8)

Well the Comet made the trip to Nashville for the event with no issues. We drove secondary roads and put in 630 miles from home to the hotel. The event was top notch, the quality of the cars was very high, many were professional builds. My Cyclone was well receipted, and received many nice compliments. For those who watch $@^-#!’n Rides on TV Dave and KenDog were there with a huge display and a variety of their builds. The car they won the Ridler award with in Detroit was there, rumor had it the car cost $5 million to build. (Yes that much)
Somewhere around 1,700-2,000 vehicles were in attendance, the cut off date was ‘72 for cars and ‘97 for sport trucks, some of the trucks were extremely nice.
We will be leaving soon for the trip home, plan to take some interstates to make the trip faster, hopefully with no issues. I’m traveling with two friends in ‘34 Ford roadsters, the maroon car has over 120k miles in it, I co pilot it to California on its maiden voyage, since then it has been there four times.

Someone who met you at the show was really impressed with YOU and posted with a pic of your car on a FB site. 64-5 Cyclones.
Congrats on your travels, Comets were built to be driven!

Thanks for the heads up on the FB. Too bad I do not subscribe to FB, I am unable to see the comment or pictures.

Thanks! I just arrived home a while ago, 11 1/2hrs on the road. Put a total of 1,375 miles on the Comet since Thursday when I left home. No issues!
Now it needs a deep cleaning! I have to start in the underside because on one of the backroads some one hit a critter and I ran over what was left, almost scared to look under there!!

Good news! No critter debris under the Comet! I spend a good part of the day cleaning and polishing the underside, did the wheel wells with a foam gun then with damp microfiber. Before I left for Nashville I sprayed the wheel well areas with some cheap spray wax, I think that helped the road grime from sticking and made the foam clean better. I also found a nail in the RR tire, luckily the tire was still holding air but was still under inflated, I repaired that and polished all the wheels today. Tomorrow I plan to clean the engine area and hopefully the body and glass. Two local events this weekend I would like to attend, weather permitting. The four post makes cleaning much easier!

Excellent! I wish I had your energy, sounds like all your hard work has paid off time and again. It’s really impressive when you can take a classic like yours on road trips and enjoy the travels. I’m hoping someday I’ll be able to do the same, might be awhile, slowly working at it.
