f 150 4.6 question OT
f 150 4.6 question OT
Hey guys, I figured I'd poke your brilliant minds to see if anyone might be able to help. My father-in-law has a 98 F150 with the 4.6 modular engine. It has 330k on it but he has taken meticulous care of it. About two weeks ago it went from running just fine and being his daily to starting and idling fine, low speeds are fine, towing and hills cause it to start popping and misbehaving. It's not throwing any codes and the plugs and wires have been recently replaced. He has since landed a sweet deal on a 02 f150. I'm looking to but this one from him since the front end has been rebuilt in the last two years, we replaced the transmission a month before i started my car, the exhaust is new, the brakes are new, AC is cold... yall get the picture. Worst case scenario, I buy for 500 and LKQ/PickYourPart has a 50% off sale memorial day weekend and I can go grab an engine for less than $200 but... then there's the work... haha.

Had a friend with one close to that year model. cant remember what engine but he had lots of trouble with the coils. it was the kind that had a coil on top of each spark plug. he finally replaced them all, but one at a time.
Re: f 150 4.6 question OT
This one still has wires, its before the coil on plug setup
Re: f 150 4.6 question OT
I had a 2000 Mustang GT with a 4.6. It would do the same; would start misfiring when going up hills. Wouldn't kick out any codes. It was under warranty so they put the diagnostics on it. Took 5 visits to the stealership but they finally figured out that the ECU (not sure that's what's it's called but the main engine computer) was making the injectors act funny. Changed it out and problem fixed.

I have a 97 and it was doing the same. Intake air leak. Also these motors don't like any spark plugs other than motorcraft for some reason.

I have a 03 5.4 that did exactly what you describe, only under a load, but it was a coil pack gone bad. Check those plugs and wires, make sure a wire isn't off the plug. To me it sOunds like vacuum or electronics. I'd remove the negative wire for 15 mins, clear the ECU's and then drive it till it does it again and check for codes.
I would be very surprised if you don't get a code or two. It is most likely vacuum or electronic controls in the fuel or spark mgmt systems.
Best of luck with it

For such a nice and well organized site/forum, it seems DEAD!!!!! Hardly any responses going up or anything! It frequents a lot of guest but hardly any members. Our little community seems to have way more going on this forum than theirs. I've hit up that one, FTE, and f150forum.com. I've been given a few things to check for but with the miles on the engine, 330k, I'm thinking i may just swap it out for the newer PI 4.6 and keep my ignition and everything the same. Just making sure I got my ducks in a row.

I must be looking at a different forum. The fordF150.net resource site has over 11,052 topics posted just to the 1997-2003 F150 forum. It has over 137,000 members that have posted over 708,000 total forum posts. They have a boatload of excellent how to and tech articles. I have used this forum for many years as have many of my friends to get quick reliable answers to problems with F150 trucks.
