A few questions for a beginner

Post by Tre107 »

I’m new to comets and don’t know a lot about them so I need some help. I’m going to look at a comet in a few weeks but don’t have any pictures of it, all I have is the VIN. The vin is 6H12c603239 and the title says it’s a murcury comet Capri but when I run the vin it says it’s a ford falcon future with a 289. From what I read in 1966 the only engine available was a 390 can someone help me figure this out and also are 4 door comets rare??

Welcome aboard! Based on the VIN 6H12C603239, the car you're considering is:
6 1966
H Built in Lorain, OH
12 Capri, 2 Dr. Sedan with standard bench seat
C 289 2V carb.
603239 The 103,239th Mercury built at Lorain in 1966

That comes from the decoder found at http://www.tpocr.com/lincolnvin6.html

The 4-doors aren't particularly rare. There were 15,635 of the Capri's built, 600 more than the 2-door model. There were slightly fewer 4-door Capri's built than 202's or Caliente's, though. http://www.mercurystuff.com/1966-models/index.html
66 was the first year a 390 was offered in a Comet. There were plenty built with smaller engines.

Good luck!
Jim
