new name

66-69 comets,im not criticizing nothing or nobody in this topic.the 64-65 comets are called era of the squarebody racing era comets.66-69 is the first funnycar comets and the nascar comets.the big comets name seems a little boring for these great comets.i know Mikes not around any more but i bet he would agree.

I like the idea, but which way do we lean?
Around the corner or straight down the line?
Im more of an oval track fan than straight line
but never knew Comets did Nascar.

Easy fix....cut 'racing Comets' off the '64-'65 description.

First flip-top funny cars were '66 Comets.

i consider all the comet models race cars, even the 70s comets made great race cars.i remember the first car wheelie i ever saw,it was a 70s comet with a small block and 4 speed it came up in 3 of the 4 gears.i still see it in my mind 40 years later.i love my 66 as a street-strip kind of car,but if i was going full time racing i would go with a falcon, early small comet or a 70s comet or maverick.

I used to do the same for my little brother, Pop. Didn't have the $$ to race my cars much raising 4 boys but my brother was single. Used to tune his 327 Chebbie to turn 8K. I ended up selling that car for him just before he married.

I'm w/ you on this one. Stuff as much horsepower you can make in the lightest body. That's the recipe.
Don Nicholson went from the flip-top Comet to the Maverick when it came out.

"I consider all the comet models race cars.."

... doesn't quite get off ground but the MEL body swept winged '61 with Tri-Power 250 small block six does " hook up and lift" on launch...

First flip-top Funny Car made, Eliminator I.

Reckon a case could be made that it wasn't officially a Comet but a 'glass replica on a dragster frame. One reason Don Nicholson went back to door-slammers a few years later.

For me, this is the car that ended the best era of drag racing. No longer anything like a production car. I have always loved door slammers, the current pro mod cars are amazing, but I still like the cars that are closest to a production body even if they aren't as fast as pro mods.
1965 Mercury Cyclone former drag car, 1971 Boss 351 engine, 4 speed, ladder bars, etc. Now returned to a street car.
