Stall when hot
Stall when hot
So the other day Im driving around and it was a pretty warm day close to 90 degrees. comet is running close to 190 deg at the red light and cuts off. Got it fired back up and it was running not so great but made it back home. Every time I stopped I had to feather the gas to keep it running. I have an edelbrock carb and intake on the car. Any reason that the car is cutting off when the temp hits around 190? Also was harder to start after that drive after about an hour or so cool down.

Probably ethanol boiling off. Running a spacer under the carb?

Yes spacer and the edelbrock heat insulator gasket. Should I try running nonethanol gas?

I would if I could get it. I run a bottle of Heet in the tank, as well to keep condensation under control when temps yo-yo.
If non-ethanol fuel doesn't cure the problem, check float and needle valve in the carb, make sure everything is working properly.
If you still have a problem, swap out the ignition coil if you have another lying around.

Hey Joe, sounds like you may have seen these issues before 190 shouldn’t hurt it, or cause issues, as far as I know. All I run in our comet is non-ethanol, no issues yet, temps get up around 200, which is fine with me. But what Joe said sounds like the thing to do.

Re: Stall when hot
Edelbrock AVS used to vapor lock sometimes if I tried to restart during a heat sink, yes.
Heat sink for my engine gets up to 210 deg. if I don't romp on it. Not bad.
I need to spring for a vented hood so I can re-install my A/C

bad coils can act crazy sometimes !Joe Travers wrote: ↑Tue Apr 18, 2023 1:49 pmswap out the ignition coil if you have another lying around.

& a spare coil is a good thing to have around just to rule it out. it being the easiest to replace I'd probably get a new one , if that dont fix it you have a spare for the future, not a bad idea to keep in the car too. Quite a few times I've spent lots of time & money only to finally figure out it's a bad coil. & some of those times I had a known good one on the shelf. condenser is another one that has laughed at me,,, if you still run points
Re: Stall when hot
I carry a tool kit and spare parts in the trunk of my Comet, a new coil and a new Pertronix module are always with me.

Re: Stall when hot
If it wasn't ethanol fuel, I'd jump straight to the coil.
Ethanol is just another maintenance issue. Not so much vapor lock for me but water accumulation in the tank. No salt on the roads down here, get to drive during winter when the roads are dry. Downside is the periods when rain hits, temps drop and tank isn't topped off (on top of 90+ deg heat from June-September).

Had a problem with mine a couple of years ago with some of the symptoms you described. Replaced the coil and solved the problem.

Thanks guys. I will try a bottle of heet and run it out of gas and refuel with non ethanol. Coil is new and im running a pertronix ignition. Hopefully that will fix my issue, its starting to warm up in middle Georgia.

Where are you in Georgia? I am in Lexington, SC, right in the middle of the state.
