I think I'm beginning to see what you mean after seeing this video;
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7SvON3A5MU4
it fastens to the bottom of the frame rails. Mustangs had the belly bar but V8 comets didn't. & doesn't have the mount holes for one on the bottom of the frame like a mustang.
So now what you are saying is starting to make sense,I think . the K-member is made for a mustang . & you're looking for points of reference to locate it. the difference in width of the frame rails of mustangs & comets is about 1 5/8'' .& you want to see where this makes your wheels & tires locate. Then you can use any aftermarket parts for a 79 -93 stang?

Re: AJE K-member
In my '64 manual I found one picture showing it (Chapter 17 where it shows the lift points under the car) and it was attached to the same place as the lower control arms not the frame, can't say it is any different in '65 or on a Mustang.

Re: AJE K-member
I spoke to a friend of mine with a 1969 Mustang. The locating hole is 2 7/8" from the center of the Lower control arm. Now I can start cutting.
Only use the brakes to stop and get gas.
