Starting line launch

Post by 383MERC »

I have now put disc brakes, Global West adjustable strut rods, rollerized control arms and spring perches, QA1 adjustable shocks on the front of this thing and got it working pretty good. The other week i cut a 1.41 60 foot time and ran a 10.702 @ 123 mph. Not too bad for a 8 1/2" tire! Bigger tires are next on the list. Time to do some rear suspension! Check out the picture.

When you have the picture showing on the photo bucket page, right click and copy the image address. Then go to Comet forum and make a post, when the post box comes up click on the "Img" box. Then paste the image address in between the IMG's that show up.

Roy said it right. NICE!!! I have done what you have except for the strut rods. I think they are next on the list for the front. Were they a simple install? Do you have travel limiters on the front? Thanks, Brian

The strut rods are a very easy install. I put them on for two reasons. The first was to help free up the front suspension along with the rollerized control arms. The other was to put some stagger in the front wheels to adjust my rollout for reaction time on the tree. It works pretty well. I used to have limiters on the car before i fixed my bump steer problem. It was so bad i had to limit it, but now that i have that fixed i just let it do its thing! Thanks, Mark

Another question for 383merc. Did you use the Global West roller upper and lower control arms? Does putting there parts on change the front end geometry so the toe does not go all wacky when the front end is lifting? I have ladder/leaf with Rancho shocks and M/T 28x9x15 tires. I have the rear working pretty good but I would like more weight to transfer from the front to the rear. Your 60' times are killer. My best 60' is 1.599 and that was on my person best of 11.599. Your car is pretty cool. Brian

I used control arms and spring perches from Opentracker. This guy has a lot of experience in suspension. They are just stock style arms (Not Tubular) with the bearings installed. I didn't feel the need for spending the extra mone on tubular for just drag racing. If it were a street car or road raced at all, i would suggest the tubular ones. As far as the bad bump steer, the control arms don't effect it any. It was the spindle and tie rod geometry that causes the problem. I had a mixed up mess of parts on my car at first. I had 2 1/2 " of bump steer through the full range of travel!! Crazy!! I used a set of CSRP granada spindles for the disc brakes and he makes a special set designed with the early mustang/falcon geometry. The arms off the back are different making the geometry much better. I still have a little tow movement, but very minimal and much better to drive. This car was a little scary to drive before i figured that out. Let me know if you have any other questions. I'll do my best to help you out. I don't want anyone else to have to go through what i did if they don't have to. Thanks, Mark
