63 comet fiberglass hood

Post by 383MERC »

Well....after only nine months.....the guy in Canada finally finished and shipped me the fiberglass hood for my 63 comet drag car! I was beginning to think he strapped it to a wild dog and was hoping it would run past my house with it! Now it's off to my body guy to have the teardrop scoop put on it and paint it. This part should be a lot less painfull. I wish i knew someone else that did fiberglass for a 63.

Yeah, I should have taken a couple before pics. I'll have to see if he started it yet. The old hood was steel and had the scoop riveted to it. Didn't look too bad. The new one will be able to be blended as one piece and should look cleaner. Also, saved about 15-20 lbs. I guess i shouldn't have left the hood pins out on that last pass. Scared the S#*! out of me! The hood stopped about 1/2" from the windshield. I guess i'm pretty lucky.

Finally got a few pics of the new hood on my 63 drag car. The old hood was steel with a fiberglass scoop riveted to it. The new hood was custom made as a flat hood and we installed the old scoop on it and molded it it. Much cleaner looking.

Those front wheels are actually original 3 1/2" Fenton Gyros. Tough to find those in the 4 1/2" bolt pattern. Wish i had another set for my next car i'm building.

I have a few of those rims also, they are like aluminum slots and have a black line around the outside if I remember right. I may have to walk out to the barn and check.

Back on subject, the hood turned out great! Not to mention your paint guy friend looks to have done a very nice job.

The hood looks great but the bright work up front is stunning!
I have a set of those 3.5's too. The only set I've ever seen!
I'd rather do it myself if it's done right or not,,,isn't that what hotrodding is all about

Yes, most of the chrome trim on this car is NOS. I spent almost 19 years collecting trim for my other 63 S-22 factory V-8 4 speed car and have just about every single piece of trim NOS. As i get duplicates, i put them on the racecar. It too has almost all NOS trim. A few years back i actually found the S-22 tail light panels NOS. I couldn't believe it. A elderly gentleman had them in the trunk of a 63 convertible he was selling and never installed them. Those are worth serious coin. Mark

Did you get that hood from Showcars Bodyparts? How is the quality? I'm assuming that if it wasn't good, it wouldn't be on your car. How long did it get hung up "at the border"? Man, 9 months is a long time but I guess that you have to plan ahead...way ahead. Having said that, was there a point when you thought that you may have been taken and not gotten the hood at all? Great looking car, by the way.

Kevin
