Small Block performance in a 65

Anyone running a 331/347 in their 64/65,what sort of times ate you getting on the 1/4? Since the cars at so light, I'm wondering how much h.p. it takes to get into the 11's? 10's? Thanks! Brandon

hey Brandon, if you research power to weight ratios on the computer it will tell you how much power it takes to run a certain ET.. :roll: . having said that take that information and throw it away because those numbers are never rite on they are close but never rite on. :evil: there are so many contributing factors gear ratios, hp and torque, tire sizes, and so on..... what im trying to say is u can have all the hp in the world but if rest of combo is wrong you wont do a thing with it. the 347 is a nice engine package so many combos available, u have to decide if its a street car or just race car either way you go its going to be awesome cuz its a merc.... if you build a nice 400 450 hp 347 and keep the weight around 3200 lbs, I bet low 12 s and 11 s are in order. if you build 500 to 600 hp your looking at 10 s and 11 s. but that's only if the rest of your combo is rite :lol: good luck pro...... :wink:

I agree with Pro64 said. It's all about the total package from carb to cam to piston etc etc to rear gear and tire. Bring that thing to Gateway when you get it done. You will bring the 65 Comet total up 3 at regular bracket races.

Brandon;my 347 in my 65 Comet Caliente went 10.67 at 128.56,but it was not street friendly.13.5 compression,.672 solid roller,aluminum flywheel,McLeod Soft-Lok clutch,Jerico 4_speed,5:83 rear gear,29.5X13X15 slicks on a ladder bar coil over rear suspension.My 418" is much more consistant and reliable,same cam and heads,13.86 compression,same flywheel,clutch,trans and slicks,but a 5:14 gear,leaves harder,runs 10.30s at over 130 at 1300RPMs lower.I did not have good luck with my 347,but I was using stock blocks,broke FIVE blocks,one was even a standard bore 342",all 5 caved in the cylinders,one even had hardblock in the cooling passages!My Comet weighed 2985 without my fat ass behind the wheel! ROY.

My plan so far is a 331, 9:1 compression, quickfuel 750 carb, forged internals. Canfield stage 2 heads.Monster built aod trans w/3200 stall converter. I'm going that way, so thatvwhen funds are available, I can add a paxton novi1200 supercharger. Anyone care to give advice on the proposed setup? Does this sound reliable? Thanks again!

what year block are you planning on using. a carb sounds to the big side for me,if I was to choose a set of cylinder heads I would take afr 185 or 205 s.with the aluminum heads u can get the compression up in the 11 s and be safe on pump gas, comp has a nice assortment of roller cams if your going that way. id say like a 560 lift intake 570 exhaust set of afr 185 s , a worked 650 holley, msd distributer, 11 to 1 compression ,nice set of headers.my guess and only a guess your looking at 400 or 425 hp. with the rite tune up of course. a 331 with those numbers will sound sweet and a lot uv fun. the biggest thing to remember is don't take shortcuts because you will never be satisfied,use all good components and in the end you ll have something your proud of that probably wont give you trouble... 8) :lol: peace

the only thing I see wrong with your plan is, I understand keeping low compression for the future super charger,but in order to be running a 3200 stall converter that usually means your running a substantial size came, which usually require compression to do it. unless you can find a custom ground cam for this type of application. and aod transmissions your going to want to research those as well,dont buy the first one u find just because someone said this is the one u want,i will tell u anything you want to hear for a dollar. goodluck :D

My 331 has run a 12.95 in the 1/4 and a 8.20 in the 1/8. A couple factors hold back my ET are the race weight is over 3500lbs, stock cast iron Windsor jr heads. Still steetable I run a 750 vacum secondary(might be a bit small at WOT), C4 3400 stall, 4:88 gear, 29.5 tall tire and a solid lifter cam. My torque converter might be an issue as I do not full understand loose or tight as it will flash to 4000rpm when launching. I'm loosing a lot in in my 60ft. But really pull hard after I get rolling. Most important is that my comet is fun to drive and very consistent when racing now. Build your comet to make you happy, drive it and race it as they are the coolest cars. 8)

my 64 is running a 8.2 deck dart block 364cu with AFR heads 13:1 comp with a big solid roller cam 950HP holley on 98 pump gas it is a full street car 3500lbs with full exhaust & has run 10.88 @ 125mph, on the chassis dyno made 401RWHP, its great fun to drive on the street & have driven long distances on the highway no problems. my old engine was 302 with 351W heads 13:1 comp, solid cam & 700 holley made 262RWHP & ran 12.71 @108mph. I have found some of those calculators are surprisingly close but the only real test is on the track. John
