Too much flow?

Post by Browncow75 »

is there such thing as Too much flow (cfm) in a set of heads? As some of you know, Im planning a 331 build. Im going with a DSS level 20 prepped block, and +6 dome pistons. Im looking at a set of 64cc Canfield stage 3 ported and polished aluminum heads, which they Say will put me at 11.12:1 compression. They flow 335
intake cfm and 245 exhaust. Will that combo work on 93 octane, and what cam would you suggest? Any other advice? Thanks! Brandon

My feelings are that head will make power way up in the RPM range!! Do you plan to spin that little engine at 8,000+?You need a cam that will work with the flow characteristics of those heads,I'd talk to some cam reps!! The CR should work well with 93. JMO , ROY.

Hi Roy,
Called Crower cams and they suggested that with this setup, I go with their cam #15523, which.is a hydraullic roller, 228/234 @ .050 and 512/531 gross lift. Power range between 2200-6500 rpm1.6 rockers. Víctor jr. Intake, 650 carb, and 3.90 rear gears. Should make a decent amount of pump gas power, and still be run to take to the track once in a while. Thoughts?

lf l may chime in roy is right you want your cam to work with your heads and intake. the power band on the victor intake I believe is 3000 rpm to 7500 rpm.wich will work good with the flow on the heads you have. jmo the cam is lacking in duration and lift. and also remember if your using an automatic the torque converter also has to match the powerband. 8)

My opinion is the cam is too small, carb is too small!! Those heads are deep breathers, not really a "STREET" head, but streetable means different things to different people. But,if you already have them, use a big rear gear[456 or so],cam in the .600 +lift range, and a 750 carb!!Those heads flow more than mine and my car ran 10.60s on a 347!!!! Hey guys, the headscome with .576 Max lift springs, so wouldnt that suggest that the lift of cam should be less than that from the factory's perspective? I admhat i have ni clue, Im Just asking. Thanks!

I dug up the info on my heads. They are Edelbrock Victor Jr.20 degree heads, max flow at .700 lift is 285 intake,199 exhaust, setup for .670 lift[I run a solid roller with .672 I&E].I would contact the head manufacturer and see what they suggest, all the info points at a much more ratical head design!!!My heads are 20+ years old,had a couple valve jobs, ports are basically stock, just cleaned up.I use them now on my 418"W,runs 10.30s in a 3300 pound 65 Comet, shifting at 6200,out the back at 7200!! It is really hard to make suggestions on a combo without every known detail,I have always trusted the manufacturers advice, even on street trucks and cars!!! ROY.

I agree with Roy if your planning on a street car those heads are way to big and that cam is way to small for those heads, in calling around for the motor I'm building with AFR 185 heads comp cam said that my cam was the smallest they would suggest and its 224/232 duration @.050 and .555/.565 lift and my heads don't flow as good as what your talking about. Yes you can have to much CFM, they don't flow on the bottom end so you have to raise the RPM through the roof to make any power. If your going full race then those heads and a lot more cam would make lots of power. I was going to go with more cam on my motor but found this one for a deal and for me it worked out that without having my pistons fly cut I could not run to much more then I already have.

I go along with Roys opinion too, but thought I would add my combo, mine is only a 364 cube & I have AFR 225CFM heads & run crower solid roller .600" lift,260@.050",13:1 comp,950cfm holley,5000rpm stall converter (I know Roy, should be clutch) 4:11 gears, it runs 10.88 3500lb `64 comet & has 401RWHP. I was told by some that my heads were too big for my cubes, but as Roy said you need to match the whole combination, you will need big exhaust too, I have 1 7/8" going into 3 1/2" collectors with 3" duals. Well, Ive discovered my mistake in reference to the heads. I was reading the flow numbers for the COMPETITION ONLY stage 3 ported heads. Duh! It says right on their site that unported or mildly ported stage 1 heads on a properly accesorized smallblock should make 500-550hp. So, as cast, the intake runners flow 192. Much more míld and street car useable! I guess it goes to Show, reading really is fundamental!

That sounds much better,I'm glad you found out BEFORE you bought and installed the heads!!!I feel your whole combo should work well!!! GOOD LUCK , ROY.

I think you still have the numbers mixed up here's what their site says "Intake runner size is 192cc, as cast. Flow figures for a competition ported Canfield will be approximately 335 cfm intake and 245 cfm exhaust." so the intake runner volume is 192CC not the flow those are 2 totally different numbers. could I ask why you want these heads? A few things to consider is that they have a raised exhaust port and "may require custom headers", I don't know but I would make sure that you can get a header that will fit the car, there are only a few to chose from and that would be a real pain. Maybe Roy or someone knows If that will make a difference. Also they look like they are more money then other heads, AFR 185's are all CNC ported and flow 297 on the intake and 215 on the exhaust, with the right cam they make tons of streetable power. Just throwing a few ideas to kick around, I know that on my build things ran over budget quite a bit for things that I did not expect and could not until the motor was mocked up.
